Songpop (iPhone App)
Around 6 months ago my husband bought me an iPad as a gift and since then I've spent most evenings lying in bed playing games against my friends and unlocking achievements in the 'Game Centre' too. One game that I have been playing regularly for several months now is 'Song Pop'. This application for the iPhone and iPad was ... free to download for me from the App Store on my iPad and the download took about 15 seconds in all after I had entered my iTunes login information.
The aim of this app is to identify the title and artist of a song. Basically you will hear an extract from a song and there will be four options on the screen. You then need to select the correct answer as quick as possible while playing against a friend or a random person throughout the World.
When you first start playing this game you will need to set up your account, taking just a moment or two, then you can choose to play against friends on Facebook. You can also add Facebook friends who aren't already playing this game and they can play against you from their laptop or PC using the Facebook app. You can also choose to play against someone random, sometimes you will be matched with players who have already played their side of the match and sometimes you will be matched with players who are yet to play against you and will see your results the first time they play a game.
When it comes to actually playing the game you will be offered three random genres to choose one from and then you will hear five songs based on this genre. Some of the genres including Rap, Rock, 90s, 80s, 70s, 60s etc and as you play games and unlock coins you can purchase further genres including UK TV Show themes and other categories too. By being able to select your own genre you may find that you can find a genre that your gaming partner is not so good at guessing and therefore you may be able to give yourself an advantage.
The part of the song that you hear is usually random and you may hear the same song on more than one occasion but different parts of it. You may even hear the same artist twice in one round of 5 songs.
If your opponent has already picked the genre and played that particular round of songs then you will see what their selection was if you don't make your selection quicker than them. This can actually mean that if you're on a streak of 3 or 4 songs that you can then guess the same answer as them and hopefully be correct. The more songs that you have guessed correctly in one round of five songs the higher the points are that you earn. This can mean that if you guess songs 1,2,4 and 5 quickly but your opponent guesses 1,2,3,4 while taking more time that they can actually beat you because of the snowball effect that the points have the more correct answers you earn in a row.
If your opponent has already picked the genre and you're just playing the genre that they selected then you get to select the next genre straight after and play through those five songs before the new request is sent to your opponent. There is a weekly score that is kept count of and at the end of the week you will receive one help token for each friend or random opponent that you beat. You can then use these help tokens to remove 1/2 of the song answers to help you improve your chances of correctly selecting the right answer if you do not know a particular song.
You will earn coins while you play the game, 1 for losing and 3 for winning. These coins can not only be used to purchase genres, as mentioned above, but you can also buy more help tokens allowing you to remove 1/2 the songs and increase your chances of winning.
At the end of each round you will see whether you or your opponent guessed quickest and the scores will tally up and tell you who the winner is. Then your weekly score will be updated as relevant and this can all be seen on the home page of the app.
This game has almost limitless longevity for me. I love how different parts of the same song can be played throughout the time I am playing and I love hearing different artists and new songs are added all the time. I love coming across a song that I haven't heard for years too and I've recently rekindled my love of lots of artists or bands that I had long since forgotten about so that is a huge plus point for me. I am a very competitive person and I love playing games against my friends. Lots of my friends play Songpop, more than any other game I have on my iPad and so there is always a load of requests waiting for me when I get in bed at night or if I am playing while relaxing in the bath or something.
When I first started playing the game there wasn't many genre options available to me but then I started to earn stars on those genres (up to a maximum of 5) and then soon I was beginning to unlock genres, mainly going for the obscure ones at first, and I've found that my friends have a varied mix of favourite genres between them and this has also increased the longevity of this game for me. I love waiting for requests to be sent back to me and generally when I choose a random opponent to play against I find that they come back to me quickly and if I'm having a lazy rainy day at home (like I am today) it is a great way to keep me entertained without wasting money on online shopping or gaming websites.
The only downside that I can think some people might find is that there are different language genres as well as English. This has meant that in the past I've been playing against someone and they have chosen a Spanish genre. However I'm seemingly quite lucky with my guesses and I do find that these is often one or two English songs thrown in for good measure so not only am I learning about new songs but I still have a chance of winning. Victory feels even sweeter when it is a genre in a language that I do not understand!
I love picking genres that my friends don't know so well and I find that the Modern Rap and 2000s categories seem to get me lots of wins as people either don't know the song or feel they can remember it and guess too fast - I love that!
There are lots of bright colours in this game and this keeps it feeling quite fresh for me. I'm not too worried about the graphics on this game as it runs well for me and I don't have any problems with freezing, failing to load correctly or buffering. I can listen to a song and if I guess it under one second the score seems to be accurate and the timer does seem to work very well for me. The game runs fast and fluidly throughout and this is definitely worth a 5 out of 5 for me.
In all I absolutely love this game. After several months of playing I have lots of different genres unlocked and I regularly win games against other people. I find that playing on the iPad gives me a slight advantage sometimes over iPhone users just because my screen is much larger and therefore the buttons to press to make my guess are much larger too, however, I do have one iPhone friend who regularly beats me in a BIG way! I love the different genres and really there should be something on here for most people. This game is easy to interact with and everything about it is quite self explanatory really. I find this very easy to use and I could easily spend 30 minutes once or twice a day replying to requests and reminiscing about songs that I haven't heard for a number of years in many cases. I am kept busy trying to beat my friends and I definitely love the competitive edge of this game. In all I am going to give this app 5/5 stars. I feel it is fantastic, especially considering it is free, and while the occasional advert coming up can be a little bit annoying you can buy an ad free version for less than a pound (most days anyway), however I'm too cheap to do this and am happy enough to close the odd advert in order to have a free game.

Songpop (iPhone App)
Since owning my Iphone for quite a while now, I've finally worked out how to download apps with the help of my granddaughter (much to her amusement). I found songpop when I was looking for music quizzes as I've always enjoyed listening to music so thought it would be fun to test my knowledge. I downloaded the app from the app store for ... free about three months ago and hadn't heard of it before then.
Simply put, the aim of the game is to guess songs. You can challenge other people by finding their username, finding friends on facebook or choosing random and playing another player who you dont' know. You can also recieve these challenges too.
There are various music genres to choose from inclusing Modern rap, Todays hits, classic rock and love songs. You only get a few to start with but can unlock more afterwards. You choose a genre then have to answer five questions as quick as you can. The questions vary, sometimes they're looking for song title and other times its the singer.
Once you send the challenge they play then send one back and the game keeps the score. If you win you recieve three coins, if you lose you recieve one. You can collect the coins and spend them on more song genres like Summer 2012, One hit wonders, Female singers and Movie soundtracks. The new genres cost over 140 coins each so you have to save for a while and it gives you an incentive to keep playing the game.
The quicker you answer the more points you score which is good if you both get them all correct as you still have a chance of winning. The song genres are really good and are quite accurate, my favourite is the 80's collection which is more my day. My grandaughter challenges me at Modern rap and Summer 2012 every time because she knows I won't beat her!
It is a fun game and is very easy to get to grips with. You can also play it on facebook now so if you don't have an iphone it works there too. It does freeze a little bit on my computer but I don't know if it's the app or my internet being a little bit too slow. The game is pretty basic with bright colours and simple black text so it's nice and easy to read.
I love that you can play the game with family or friends as it's more fun than just challenging a stranger. I do wish you could send a message with some challenges, especially when I get them all right so I could taunt my grandaughter! I think it is good that you can't though as it'd be a bit unsafe for younger users getting messages from strangers.
For a free game, it's definitely worth downloading as it is really addictive and quite good fun. It can get a bit frustrating when you keep losing but it makes you more determined to get better at it. Have a go!

Songpop (iPhone App)
Playing games on the iPad I find myself seeing new games all the time and one of these is a game I have seen rave reviews about for a while now so decided to go and make a move and download the game. ~~ The Game ~~ Well the game from the title might give away some indication as to what this application is all about. ... This app requires you to use your music knowledge and try and work out various tunes you hear in a quick time.
You begin by setting up the account which is just a name and you then get to choose whether you want to play a friend from your Facebook lists who have the application or you can face someone random who is online and playing the game as well.
Once you have selected an opponent you then can pick one of three music genres and these can include anything from Rap, Rock or even 90's music. You pick the category your most confident with and perhaps an area someone else might fail in.
You begin with seeing 5 options at the bottom of the screen and this displays name of tunes you can pick from. However, you need to be quick when choosing a song because you will hear a piece of music and this could be a chorus of a song or just the beginning and you need to try and pick the correct song in a fast time.
The song can be anything based on the genre so if you hear a song from 1960 in the Love Songs genre then you need to work out who it is. The more correct answers you accumulate without getting any wrong you end up with a higher score overall.
Once you have done your five songs you then send the challenge to the player you have opted to face and wait for the score to come back. When you receive notification they have had their turn you see the overall results. If your score wins you get 3 coins and if you lose you get 1 coin.
Usually when you have offered a challenge and they accept the other player tends to offer a challenge in return and this time they can choose which genre you play and you then have to try and beat there score.
If you get a song wrong the game reveals who the song was performed by and this is good in case you need this for future reference. The coins you use to try and purchase new genres and you also get options to buy new the songs you hear at the end of the challenge from the iTunes library as well.
~~ Songs ~~
The songs are played in various stages so you might have a song such as Thriller by Michael Jackson and this might be on the challenge but played at the start, middle or even the ending so you have to try and work out the title of the song quickly.
This is what I enjoy the most about the game because the songs are played at various stages through them so you never know which part might ring a bell in your mind to get you predicting the correct answer.
I find sometimes the start of a song so difficult to work out yet the middle of the song and the chorus I find extremely easy so this is what I do enjoy the most.
Unfortunately there is a few issues regarding songs and that is that you might play Love Songs 10 times and see the same sort of songs appearing all the time so you do not learn anything new and for me that is the one downside to the song list.
Just imagine the same song appearing each time you would know the answer which is helpful but is can get really silly as well. With the songs when you continue to get songs right your rating on that genre increases and you end up with new songs which is helpful.
However, you can use the coins you accumulate to unlock new genres and use these areas to face various opponents so it means you can get more coins when you use this method.
The songs played are from a wide range of people and my worst category is the rap genre because I struggle to understand the lyrics and the names of the artists are even worst for me as I have no idea who on earth they are.
However since playing this game I have learnt new song titles, new artists and actually begun to enjoy the genre more so the game can increase knowledge.
~~ Opponents and Genres ~~
You can select players to play against from either your Facebook lists or even just random opponents. The random people you pick you have no idea what there general knowledge on each genre is like.
It is a lucky dip when you choose this method because you might pick an area you believe they are weak in and when there profile loads you find out they are an expert at that area so there is good competition there which is really good for me.
The fact you do not know what your opponent rating is on that particular genre for me makes the game more fun to play because otherwise it would be boring and you do not want to make it to easy otherwise the point of this game would be pointless.
The genres they have are very poor I find at the start of the game when you first start playing and I continue to see around the same 6 or 7 popping up and it can be repetitive and boring so the sooner you use the coins to generate new genres the better.
The genres as mentioned above vary from all sorts of areas from Rock to 90's hit single to even the current music charts so you have to be vigilant and pick sensible options when you spend coins. I think the genres and the opponents you select a very good part of this game and makes everything very enjoyable.
~~ Graphics and Game Play ~~
Well the graphics is not really anything major to discuss in this area because you see mainly texts and back ground colours there is nothing really there to jump up about.
The game looks very good and you can tell it is a game that has had plenty of attention to detail because the colours on display are not going to conflict and look out of place and everything is bright and visible so the graphics are very good for what they offer.
The game play is very quick, you can have plenty of challenges taking place all at once and the speed to which you can play a game is very good. I have never had a fault thus far with speed and problems with the application.
I would say for a game like this you might expect perhaps to see the game close down at times and maybe a song choice in the challenge mode slow down and not work correctly. I have never had any of these problems and all songs play instantly and in great audio as well.
~~ Final Thoughts ~~
This game is one of those which will appeal to many people because it offers so much. The game has got plenty of songs to listen to and the fact you can challenge random strangers very good.
The other day I had challenges from one gentlemen and the score was 7-7 in terms of challenges and I found that fun it was a big rivalry we had and it was just trying to outdo each other which was fun and this is what this game is all about, fun.
I have said that at times hearing repetitive songs in the same genre is a bit bad because it means the game can seem pointless because you're not actually gaining anything from them so you do need to try and spend the coins wisely and also gain a new rating on a particular genre to unleash new songs.
For a free application this is one of the best and if you use Facebook you can boast to friends who you have beaten and it can create more rivalries with friends as well. This is very worthwhile game which I would give an 8 out of 10 rating.
