Shazam (iPhone Application)
Advantages: Free, Identifies Most Songs Correctly,Loads of Useful Information Links, Very Quick.
I first encountered Shazam quite a few years ago. There was an advert on the T.V which told you to ring a number whilst music was playing. After around 10 seconds you would receive a text message telling you the name of the song. I remember how brilliant I thought it was then, so you can imagine how pleased I was that I could get the App for free on my Iphone.
I've always had a very eclectic taste in music, but I've never really been one for remembering titles and lyrics of songs. My friends and family had all become very annoyed at me humming the lyrics to music trying to see if they knew what the hell I was on about. Enter Shazam.
The App works in very much the same way as the original service, but you don't have to dial out and the result appears on the screen rather than in a message. It couldn't be more simple to use. On clicking on the App a screen will appear with a button that says Tag Now in the top right hand corner. The App then listens to the music that's playing for about 10-15 seconds. Once it's heard enough, it will analyse the song for a further 10 seconds or so and then displays the result on the screen.
The results screen will show you, first of all the title and artist of the track as well as the album title and a picture of the album cover. The App also provides several different links including one to buy the song from Itunes. As well as the artists biography and discography and links to share the track on facebook and twitter. In many cases it also provides a link to the video for the song on Youtube, however this isn't available for every track. The service creates an acoustic fingerprint based on the music sample that has been provided, this is then compared with a database in order to find a match.
This is probably my favourite App of all time. I can't count the number of times I've put it to use in a club or just listening to the radio to find out what that song is called. The App also stores all the songs you've tagged for future reference. In terms of effectiveness, there has only been a couple of times where it hasn't worked. In such cases, the result will come up as unrecognised. After much testing, I worked out that it tended to be obscure remixes and extremely niche market music. I'd say the general rule is that if a song has been officially released and is available to buy, Shazam will recognise it.
The best thing about this App is that it's free on I phone's and well as several other smart phones and androids. Shazam would definitely be worth paying for, but luckily we don't have to.
Summary: Brilliant Music Identification Service.
