Unfortunatley i had a power surge a few weeks ago which fried my desktop computer leaving me with the joyous task of having to refit several items within my pc. Having so many different items to replace at once I was on the look out for a budget option.
Priced at £11 at CCL Online I quickly snapped this up and because I live close to their shop in Leeds I went to pick the sound card up with my desktop pc in toe with the cheeky hope that they would fit it for me too!
As it is an 'out of the motherboard' card you get a much better sound quality using one of these - obviously this is also dependant on your speaker too! But as long as you have a good set of speakers you will definatley notice the difference. Especially when playing games or movies as the sound is played in relation to where the action is happening on the screen rather than a more mono tone sound. The technial term for this is 3D positional audio if you wanted to look it up further.
As you would expect the card is compatable with 5.1 surround sound and this works well with my speakers. The card even upscales audio CDs up to 5.1 which I find quite impressive and makes my music much more enjoyable to listen to.
To use this card you will firstly need to find someone to be able to fit it yourself or know some one who can as there are limited instructions in the box. Hence why I had CCL fit mine! It is only compatable with a AMD Athlon XP 2000+ processor or equivalent, 512MB Ram or more and you will need 600MB hard drive space.
This isn't the most powerful sound card on the market, but this I feel is reflected in its price. For £11 I am very pleased with this purchase as for a small price it has enabled me to enjoy all the games, dvds and music we all buy to a higher standard.
Sound quality is poor. Not much better than the onboard sound that I have for my Acer desktop computer. In fact the onboard sound is much better. Quite disappointing I must say.
