Advantages: Pro quality and many in/out options

Disadvantages: a tad pricey but worth it!

Another gadget from the digidesign family which does what its supposed to and very well! A portable sound card which is small in size but more then powerful to a professional standard. The unit is paired with the world class audio software from Digidesign 'Pro Tools LE' The LE version of the software will not function without an attached piece of digidesign hardware, this unit being one of them.

The Mbox pro is one of four in the Mbox range there are:

-Mbox Micro
-Mbox 2 Mini
-Mbox 2
-Mbox 2 Pro

The difference between the four is available input/output options and also the quality of sampling rate available from the units.

The Mbox 2 Pro offers 4 analog inputs (2 XLR/1/4" TRS combo jacks & 2 1/4" TRS jacks) as well as 6 analog outputs (1/4" jacks) there are also an additional 2 direct injention ports on the front as well (1/4" jacks).

As mentioned before it is capable of very high quality results even if portable, the unit supports up to 24-bit/96 kHz resolution and offers all professional options such as 48v phantom power, dedicated monitor output, Midi IN/OUT and low latency monitoring.

Multiple headphone monitoring can also be achieved by the unit through two individual headphone outputs each with their own monitoring level.

The unit can either be powered via fire wire connection or by using the included power supply. (i personally use a fire wire cable as it means one less cable in a most likely already cluttered setup!)


I have used this sound card for all of my portable recordings and it has never to this day let me down once! It really allows me to go out and capture which ever sounds i require in a professional standard ready for use wherever else i take it!

It may look a tad pricey compared to other portable sound cards in the range but you must remember that when you purchase the sound card it too comes with its partnered 'Pro Tools LE 8' software which can be expensive enough by itself! Together they offer a fantastic recording setup!

I would recommend this card 100% to anyone who is interested in getting serious in recording whether it be home or 'on the road'
