Advantages: jaccuzzi, sauna and pool alongside all other equipment.

Disadvantages: the cost is pretty crippling month after month

Canons is the premier gym in Plymouth, along with the Health and Raquet Club at Derriford. Membership is an expensive £40 average a month, but you get a top of the line gym, TVs, bar, pool, Jacuzzi and sauna for that, so it's worth it. Staff are very friendly too.
I never found the instructors very helpful - they tend to enjoy posing around and flirting with the women, but everything is self explanatory anyway.
When you're on the treadmill you can listen to the radio or watch one of the huge TVs in front of you which passes the time and takes your mind off the pain!
I chose this gym because of the pool and Jacuzzi. After a hard workout, it's incredibly nice to go and take a dip in the pool, then toast yourself in the Jacuzzi, then repeat!
Maybe because it's a top of the line gym, the clientele are often really nice people, and it's a very social gym. I have often sat for hours in the pool or Jacuzzi just chatting away to the people as they come or go (I sound terribly lonely don't I?)
A word of advice: they don't like you trying to cancel your membership; our friends moved to a different county, but they were refused the cancellation. Granted, they were still within a 30 minute drive of the gym, but it seemed a bit nasty to me. Still, business is business.

Summary: if you want the best, forget the rest

Yeah, but here in Plymouth there are plenty of £20 a month low budget gyms and this is the most expensive.

£40/month is average, bordering on cheap? Someone I work with pays £80/month for Daivd Lloyd
