      A really expensive mistake......

      Signed up for Curves last year as a few of my friends had done the same and they raved about it......the enthusiasm was short lived...for me and them. I have ended up with a torn rotator cuff, sore back and knees. I have now no faith in the instructors as each of them tell you different ways of using some of the machines. I am not sure if they are qualified or not but it gives me great concern if they aren't as there are elderly people using the machines and if they are not taught properly there could be serious injuries. Also they decided to cut the hours of opening after I had joined which was a bit unfair too. They also seem to be on a recruiting drive every day which makes it sometimes difficult to get on machines as it is so crowded at times. I have just cancelled my subscription with 2 months to go but will not be going back. It has been the worst training experience of my life and am now having to get physiotherapy for my shoulder due to not being shown properly how to use one of the machines. All of my friends who had joined Curves (both here and abroad) are not renewing their membership. That tells it's own story.......

      a rip off, 30 plus dollars a month? for the same routine, same machines, AND THEY LIMIT THE AMOUNT OF TIME?? PLEASE, join a gym, like planet fitness for less than half that, ...AND HOW THE HELL DO THEY CLEAN THE MACHINES IN BETWEEN USERS?????????????????? THEY DONT!

      I am very happy with my curves membership and I feel welcome there.

      After many years of yo-yo dieting, my sister treated me to a membership at my local curves. I was extremely worried and self-concious about how I was going to feel after my many experiences in normal gyms. I plucked up the courage and finally went for my induction with my sister. Once we arrived, the fitness instructor asked us to fill in a number of forms, explain what we wanted to achieve from our workouts, and did the usual weighing, body fat and measuring different parts of our bodies. Every other gym I have been a member of haven't measured my waist, hips, bust, legs and arms so I was impressed by this service.

      After we had done all the paperwork, we were shown around the gym circuit. Basically curves consists of a big circle of alternate hydraulic machines which work two parts of your body at one time, and recovery mats which you are given exercises to follow or you can complete what is shown on the printed sheets in front of you. We were given the opportunity to have a go around the circuit and what I absolutely love about curves is the fact that it is only a 30 minute workout so anyone can fit it into their day. The hydraulic machines give you a workout known as strength training which builds muscle (but not bulk), and therefore increases your metabolism. There are no weights on these machines as your own body weight provides the resistance needed to work those muscles. Every 30 seconds you hear a voice over the loudspeaker and move onto the next thing. You complete the circuit 3 times to get your full 30 minute workout. Because you are constantly changing the exercise you are doing it doesn't feel boring like staying for 30 minutes on a treadmill does. The music is also very motivational in our local curves.

      Once we had been given our tour of the circuit, we both signed up straight away. We have paid for 4 months in advance although in our local curves there is an option to pay monthly. I have been four times each week since we joined and although I haven't weighed yet I am desperate to know how many inches I have lost because I already feel a difference. Curves is VERY motivational. Most of the time, an instructor asks how you are doing, or tells you to work a bit harder / faster /slower. I asked my instructor for exercises to do on the recovery mats which would be good for my stomach / love handles and she looked up a number of different things I could try and came around the circuit with me doing them at the same time.

      So far, I don't feel self concious, the gym is very friendly and the workout does make you feel like you are burning calories. I come out every time sweating! Not only am I getting a good workout in a very friendly gym, but it is quite social too. Our local curves has run the race for life this year, and there are extra events like belly dancing lessons and massage sessions. I don't know if this is across the board at all curves, but it is offered in mine.

      As for costs, I am paying £29 a month, so it is reasonable compared to other gym memberships.

        I joined my local branch of Curves just over a year ago; a leaflet had been pushed through my letterbox inviting me to go along for a free session. I phoned the number given, was given a brief rundown of how Curves operates and arranged to go in the following day.

        A little nervous, I visited at the appointed time and was greeted by a friendly woman on the desk who took my details and then showed me the workout. I could see several women already on the equipment and the place was vibrant and busy.

        Having been shown the workout, including how to use every piece of equipment and how to do the exercises on the 'recovery' boards, I was asked if I thought it was suitable for me. I had a few questions to ask, one of them being that I did not need to lose weight but would like to 'tone up' and generally improve my fitness level and would the workout be able to provide me with this? I was told that I could tailor the workout to suit myself but that I should not attend more often than three times a week and to keep to the same eating pattern.

        So, I joined, paying a £59 one-off joining fee and arranging to pay the monthly fee of £29 by direct debit. I had to sign up for a minimum of four months which I didn't think was too much of a commitment - certainly not like paying for a full year's membership to a more expensive gym and then not being able to attend very often. If I attend three times a week it works out at around £2.40 a session which is really inexpensive. I have a friend who goes there five times a week so for her it is really cheap.

        You are given a key fob which you have to swipe past the computer on reception; this records how many workouts you have done to date and also reminds you to have your weight and measurements taken. This is done with the utmost respect by the qualified ladies who staff the gym. Usually, your weight is taken first, then you are measured on the bust, hips, waist, abdomen, right thigh and right upper arm, and then you hold the BMI device which tells you your body mass index (your height to weight ratio). All these measurements are recorded and updated once a month so that you can monitor progress. They have a reward system whereby you can earn Curves 'dollars' for losing weight as well as earning more 'dollars' when your birthday comes round. They have a good selection of 'workout' goodies which you can buy with your dollars.

        As for the workout itself, all the equipment is set up in a wide circle alternating between a peice of equipment followed by a recovery board. The equipment will either work your upper body or your lower body and these are also alternated so that you do not, for example, use two upper body machines one after the other. The recovery boards are to be used after each piece of equipment and are designed to keep the pace of the workout going but not specifically to work on any part of the body. You can simply jog on the boards but, at our branch, each board is labelled with an exercise that you can do if you wish and these include goal saves, leg kicks, hamstring curls, knee lifts and so on.

        All the workout equipment has been specially designed for use by women and they all work on the hydraulic resistance principle. You can join in on the first empty spot you find; I usually start off on one of the recovery boards so that I can begin my workout by gentle jogging. You spend no more than thirty seconds on each piece of equipment or board and then a voice breaks into the up-tempo music to remind you to 'change stations now' and you move on to the next 'station'. You complete the circuit twice which takes twenty-five minutes and then you go to the stretching area and follow the simple exercises that you are shown on our first visit, but can follow using the charts on the wall. Each stretching exercise involves stretching different muscles of the body and holding for fifteen seconds and this ensure that you do not spend the following day aching from your efforts.

        During the workout popular music is played which has been re-arranged to give you a beat to work out to; this is so much better than working out in silence and adds to the vibrant buzzing atmosphere. In the centre of the workout area will always be at least one member of staff who is there to offer advice and to ensure that you are using the equipment correctly. They are more than happy to be asked for their advice.

        My branch is light and airy; they provide fans and air-conditioning for warm days, very clean and modern changing rooms and toilets, a water cooler and a paper towel dispenser close to the workout area and a noticeboard showing the month's top weightlosers and forthcoming events. You are asked to change your shoes when entering and leaving,m for hygiene reasons, and lockers are provided to store your personal belongings while you are working out.

        I think Curves offers excellent value for money; it is for women only, you do not need to wear special clothing - I just wear old jogging pants, t-shirts and lightweight trainers, and the workouts are not long enough to become boring. For just thirty enjoyable minutes three times a week I can keep fit and feel that I am doing myself the power of good.

        My branch opens every day except Sunday from 7.30am until 7.30 pm. On some days they close for lunch, on others they don't. Each branch will provide you with their terms and conditions as well as things like their opening hours and so on.

        I have had to miss a few sessions now and again either through illness or other commitments but it doesn't take long to get back into the swing of things at Curves and there is no pressure on you to attend religiously. The whole idea is to tailor-make the Curves experience to suit yourself. I thoroughly recommend it to women of all ages, all levels of fitness and all weights. My branch counts among its members women up to the age of 80 so there is no upper age or fitness level.

          Go, Have fun and Lose weight!

          After years of struggling with my weight and drawn out gym routines, Ive finally found something that works for me. After joining Curves I have dropped a dress size in just two weeks and I look and feel amazing. I ve got a long way to go but Curves makes women feel welcome and its only 30 mins!! I would recommend anyone to join. The only drawback is that the joining fee is rather high, however, monthly payments are low and affordable. I try to attend 4 times a week and follow a healthy eating programme, I also have 1 day a week where I eat anything I please and Im still losing the weight. The women there are lovely and all shapes and sizes and they make you feel very welcome, you are weighed and measured every month which is long enough to see some changes in your body.

          I have been going to curves for five weeks 3-4 days per week.I don't feel any different and am starting to feel like I'm never going to lose weight. Should I be downhearted or should I perservere?

          Good exercise regime for every size of women

          I joined Curves 2 months ago and was surprised at how much inches I lost when measured for the first time. I like that it just lasts 30 minutes and so I dont feel guilty about leaving the kids longer with a sitter as I go right after work. I like that it is just females of all ages, shapes and sizes, so dont feel odd like you can at a gym. Since you only spend a little time on each machine and then move on you dont get to tired of it.

            I will stick to riding my bike and walking to work!

            I joined a Curves gym 2 years ago! I had never been a member of a gym before and have to admit to feeling a little bit intimidated by them. I thought Curves would be good for me as it is women only so no big butch men showing off etc.

            The exercise programm offered by curves only takes 30 mins so its a good option for busy women who find it difficult to make time for exercise.

            However I found the programme extremely boring! It is made up of 3 circuits of the room. You spend 3 minutes on each item of equipment with 3 mins of walking/jogging/dancing etc on the spot in between each one.

            Maybe not all Curves centres are the same but the one I went to lacked any atmosphere, women rushed in and out without speaking to each other.

            The changing room facilities were poor, without even a shower.

              A fun and effective way to lose weight.

              2 years ago, I followed a diet and did regular exercise at Curves, for 7 months I exercised 3 times a week at my local curves centre and now 2 years later I am back read on to find out why.

              *~*~What is Curves?~*~*
              First and foremost Curves is a 30 minute exercise routine that combines strength training and sustained cardiovascular activity through regulated hydraulic activity. In simpler terms its a way of exercsing that is not too time consuming and not too demanding. Everyone has 30 minutes to fit this exercise in even me!

              *~*~Where are they located?~*~*
              Worldwide is the simple answer. There are 5 Curves franchises all within a 10 minute travelling distance to me in either direction and they are popular with women of all ages young and old alike.

              *~*~Joining*~*~
              When I joined 2 years ago there was an initial joining fee and monthly charge, at the moment there is no joining fee and the monthly charge if paying by direct debit is £29 per month.
              The hardest step they say is walking through the door, but once you are in the staff are helpful and encouraging.
              On you first visit you will be measured and weighed and the consultant will talk through your goals and what you want to aim for. If you cannot commit to a 30 minute work out for at least 3 times a week then maybe this is not for you but I find it ideal the opening times fit in with my work commitments and it’s a quick work out that certainly gives you great benefits.
              The gym is strictly women only and is designed with weight loss in mind so sorry guys, you won’t be able to join.

              *~*~How does it work?~*~*
              Once you become a member you will receive a key fob similar in size to the Tesco Club card key fobs. This is to be swiped each time you visit as this will show how many workouts you have completed and also be able to tell you when you will need to be weighed and measured again which is normally once a month.
              Within each curves gym you will see that the equipment is arranged in a specific order and in a circular pattern facing inwards. The machines are easy to learn and easy to use and are specifically designed for women. Everyone that attends curves has one goal in mind to improve their figure and lose weight through regular controlled exercise.
              I went 3 times a week for 7 months and lost 1 stone in weight just by exercising and found I was more toned and had finally lost weight from my arms and thighs my most hated parts of the body that I previously hadn’t been able to get rid of the excess fat.
              When you enter the gym you should start on the square blocks to get your heart rate going, here you can pretty much do what you want march on the spot, jog on the spot or skip which ever you prefer. I tend to start slowly by marching on the spot and then on the 2nd circuit I run on the spot to keep my heart rate up and by the third circuit I start to slow down again. In between each square block is a piece of the equipment a recorded voice will advise you to “change stations” in which you move clockwise around the circuit, you must do 3 circuits and end on the square blocks. Once you have completed your work out it is essential that you do stretches to relax the muscles as many people just leave the gym once they complete the workout not realizing that the stretches are just as important.
              You complete your work out to energetic music that you find yourself singing along to as you get yourself into your routine.
              As mentioned earlier you get weighed and measured once a month this and then your statistics are placed into the computer to provide you with a graph showing your weight loss and inch loss.
              Curves is fun, the people are friendly and competitions run regularly where you can win merchandise such as t-shirts as prizes.

              *~*~Is it worth it?~*~*
              In my opinion yes it is, otherwise would I be rejoining 2 years later? Admittedly I need to lose inches as well as weight to get into my wedding dress that is hanging in my parents house so I had to get into a routine I knew worked for me and would give me results and quickly.
              It is just over 2 years since my last work out and the gyms have not changed apart from no joining fee and a slight increase in the monthly payments but it still offers great flexibility for morning or afternoon/evening work outs and goals are set to help you achieve them.
              I have had a work out today and already feel full of energy and healthier, we just need to see if I can get the results just like before.
              If you are anxious about joining a gym or want to join a gym where you will not feel pressured then Curves is ideal, as it is run by women for women, they know how to get the best shape for your body and how to get the best results from the machines.
              Save joining fees at other gyms and join curves its friendly, a great way to exercise and it won’t break the bank.

              I will be back to update you all with the results from next months weighing and measuring to feed my results!!

                Great concept esp for the busy working mums of the 21st Century!

                I joined Curves about a month ago and so far it is great! I am full time working mum of 2 and desperate to shed pound and get rid of post baby tummy weight. I have combined it with healthy eating - weight watchers. My weight has not yet dropped dramatically but in my first month I have lost at total of 6 inches and I feel so much better. It is fun, fast and healthy, the team at my local curves are super, really friendly and helpful. Go for it - its great!

                Affordable gym membership for women with limited time

                Curves

                This time last year I was fired with enthusiasm to do something which would get me fit and not take up too much of my time.
                Recommended by a couple of people I know, and just opened very close to me, I joined Curves for Women.

                **The History**

                This was founded about 27 years ago by Gary Heavin, who had dropped out of medical school, and then began to provide fitness services which would prevent illnesses.
                The first Curves was opened in Texas in 1992 and the first franchise opened in 1995.
                In 10 years, Curves reached 9000 locations and has entered the Guinness Book of Records as “the world’s largest fitness center franchise”

                **What’s it all about?**

                It’s all about fitting exercise into your busy schedule, with a cardio and strength training programme which takes only 30 minutes, 3 times a week.

                **The hype and promises…**

                QUICKFIT system fits into your lifestyle. The quickfit aerobic esercise circuit with hydraulic resistance means that you can permanently lose fat (apparently)
                IT’S FUN, because the workout is done to music and you will be moving from exercise to exercise so won’t get bored
                IT’S SAFE- hydraulic resistance is similar to water exercise and the safe controlled resistance keeps you moving smoothly and safely around the circuit. The exercise is recommended for overweight and older members because there is no stress on bones and joints, and the routine is tailored to your own level of fitness.

                **So…what happens**

                I went along to talk about joining and from the start felt a bit pressurized into doing so; it was almost as though they would come to the bank with me to get the cash out of the machine.
                Anyway, I paid my joining fee(I think it was about £70 but check out your local Curves because they often have 2 for 1 offers), filled out the direct debit mandate for £30 a month, and was given a time to go back and be assessed.
                This is actually what I wanted to do initially, have an assessment and be weighed and measured before I signed up for a year but this was not allowed, but I did go home with a swipe card and some information on Curves.
                The day of measuring arrived and practically every part of me was measured, then I was weighed and my body fat measured. This was all written down and I was shown the details; presumably this was for women who wanted to lose inches.
                I was then taken around the equipment and given advice on how to use it effectively.

                Ok, so I knew how to use the equipment and all I had to do was go to exercise 3 times a week. Fired with enthusiasm for the first couple of months, I did go regularly.
                When you go to the gym, all you do is swipe in and all of your details come up, so that there is a check on how many times in total and that month you have exercised.
                The equipment was simple to use, the instructors were friendly, helpful and encouraging and after a month or two I had toned up. I received my monthly printed graphs showing my weight, body mass and measurements, all compared with the previous months, and all was going good
                However, then the rot seemed to set in.
                The Curves I went to closed down for a couple of weeks for refurbishment and when it reopened, the luster had gone.

                That’s “my story” of the Curves experience.

                **Verdict**

                I think the concept is great- get fit by going to the gym 3 times a week for half an hour at a time. I think there are many people out there who don’t want to spend forever at the gym
                However, I read somewhere that a 30 minute workout would burn off only 184 calories so if you are trying to lose weight, you would have to combine it with some serious healthy eating regime.
                I found the “going round in circles” Quite tedious after a while- good fun at first but after a while I started to want to have music dvds to watch.
                If you find traditional gyms intimidating then this is the place for you. My experience was that there were no super fit people in the latest designer gear, but normal women wanting to tone up.
                Another problem was the opening hours. I work full time but have lots of holidays and it was frustrating turning up at lunchtime to find that it was closed for four hours- if I go to the gym, if it’s not open, I won’t go later as I have limited dedication.

                Advantages- great for people with limited time, affordable membership, health club beginners and people with a gym fear
                Disadvantages- rigidity of the circuit, opening hours.

                I am going to recommend it although it’s right for some women and so not right for others, but I enjoyed it while I was there.
