Advantages: Smaller equipment, so easier for women.

Disadvantages: Have to pay sign up fee plus a 12 month contract. Small room and no showers that you get at a gym.

I had a leaflet from Curves in Chippenham, Wiltshire, for a week free trial. I'm into fitness and thought the free trial would be enough to decide if it's right for me, before I have to sign a contract. I went in and showed the free trial leaflet and she showed me around, and said I would have to pay a sign up fee of £150 plus 34 pounds a month with a 12 month contract.
I said that I had a free trial and she didn't seem to want to offer it to me and said if I don't have the free trial then she would do the sign up fee for half price. I asked other people and they said that they didn't have to pay £150 pounds sign up fee, so she wasn't really giving me a discount. I don't know how they can get away with lying about a week free when all they want to do it get you in, to sign a contract. There's no option to pay as you go or have a shorter contract. I think 34 pounds a month is expensive as I can pay less than that at a gym that has showers and a jaccuzi after the work out. The building just has a small work out room with a toilet and changing. I think it's a bit of a rip off. You're supposed to go around the circle of machines twice and then do some stretching exercises after. I usually spend an hour in the gym and can watch the TV while I'm doing it, or listen to the radio. There's no TV in curves and unless you bring in your own earphones, the curves music has an American woman's voice every so often telling you to change the machine. I can see why you wouldn't want to spend more than 30 minutes there.

The equipment is quite good, as it's smaller than the gym, so easier for a woman but it's too much money for what you get and the opening hours aren't good as only open for a couple of hours on Sat and closed on Sunday.

Summary: It's more expensive than a gym and you don't get as much for your money.
