Advantages: Very pretty area
Disadvantages: Someone else's skin and germs!
I bought a special deal through a well known internet discount voucher supplier! I booked my manicure & pedicure and looked forward to a relaxing pampering session. When I got there the building was really nice, it's an old town house I think, very lovely property clearly very old and in keeping with the general feel of Durham. I was shown to a waiting room with magazines and DVD playing, nice touch! I was then taken through to the nail bar to have my manicure (I found this odd as I would be getting my pedicure second, meaning I'd be leaving with wet toe nails on a damp autumn day wearing boots and thick socks!). The manicure began, the young lady still had the stamp on her hand from the previous night out and looked a little 'tired', she shaped my nails using a previously used emery board then using a wooden manicure stick which had very clearly been used on other customers as it was covered in different coloured nail varnish, she pushed my cuticles back. She then picked up the metal cuticle clippers (these were just lying on the work surface - no barbicide in sight) and picked out the previous customer's skin from inside them before clipping mine!! I was mortified - someone else's skin and then no disinfection between customers? I'm sure this should be a health hazard! The young lady used body cream instead of hand cream to moisturise, she didn't remove my old nail varnish until immediately before applying new varnish - the varnish selection was atrocious, loads of different brands all just about empty in various different shades of pink! As suspected when I was moved to have my pedicure I smudged my nails removing my boots and socks, I wouldn't let the lady do much to my feet and we agreed on just a bit of hard skin removal, after seeing the hygiene during the manicure I didn't want to risk my feet! I further damaged my nail varnish when I replaced my socks and boots (I didn't bother with varnish on my toes as I just wanted to get out by then). The lady put two very gloopy layers of varnish over the smudged nails and I exited quickly, re-smudging the still very wet varnish when I put my jacket on. I got home and soaked my hands in anti bacterial products! Its such a shame this was so poor, the building is so welcoming, they salon could be so much better with just basic hygiene and more staff training. If I'd paid full price I would've been furious - I won't be going back!
Summary: Walk 10 meters down the hill and visit somewhere far less scary!
