Advantages: Good facilities

Disadvantages: High prices

As part of my friend’s 40th birthday celebrations I spent the day at Springs Health Farm with her, so I thought I would tell you all about it.

Springs is just south of Ashby de la Zouch near to Measham and junction 12 of the M42/A42.

There were quite a group of people who wanted to go, some stayed for the weekend (£209.95), some just stayed overnight on Saturday (£99.95) and three of us just went for the day on Saturday.

We chose the ‘Springs Day’ costing £74.95 payable when we booked last September. This included an introduction and coffee on arrival at 9am, a buffet lunch, a full body massage, a facial and unlimited use of all the facilities until our departure at 6pm.

We arrived at 9am and were shown to the locker room where we could store our bags during the day. These were operated by a £1 coin, which was returned when the locker was opened, so it didn't cost us a fortune to keep opening and closing the lockers. We were offered the hire of a bathrobe for £3 for the day but refused as we were wearing tracksuits, which were considered acceptable outfits.

We received our schedule telling us that lunch would be at noon and that our two massages would be at 1pm and 1.30pm. We were then shown around the building so that we knew where everything was and were given our cups of coffee.

There is a complete schedule of activities for each day including aqua fit, yoga, free dance, workouts, aerobics, stretch classes, step classes etc. There is also a fully equipped gym with instructors to make sure the equipment is used correctly. There is a badminton court, a swimming pool, Jacuzzi, sauna and steam room.

There is an outdoor tennis court, croquet lawn, mountain bikes for hire and horse riding and golf can also be arranged for an extra charge.

There is a range of treatments available to purchase in addition to the standard massages including beauty treatments - waxing, sunbed, ha
irdressing, manicure, pedicure etc, and others such as flotation, aromatherapy, shiatsu, reflexology, hypnotherapy etc.

We booked a badminton court from 10.15 to 11.00 at no extra cost and played a few games of ladies doubles. Then we adjourned to the Jacuzzi for a relaxing half an hour, before getting ready for lunch at noon.

Lunch was a buffet of lots of different salad dishes, salmon en croute, rollmop herrings, curried chicken, pasta, jacket potatoes, and chicken balti. This was served with garlic naan bread and bread rolls. Sweet was fresh fruit salad containing all the fruits you could think of and served with yoghurt. I found the meal most enjoyable and filling.

The full body massage was booked for 1pm and when I went in the masseuse offered me the choice of full body or just back massage. I chose full body but she only massaged my back, which I thought was a bit of a swizz! The facial was lovely, with the most beautiful smells from all the different products used. We were all given a list of what had been used during the facial so that we could purchase the items at the shop if we so wished. I looked at the prices and decided against it.

We all felt very relaxed at this point and sat in the lounge discussing our next move barely able to keep awake! I decided to go to the flex and stretch class at 3.30 as I am not fit enough to do anything too strenuous at the moment. This was an excellent class. The whole thing was taken at a slow pace, but I really knew I’d been stretching when I’d finished!

My final class was the free dance at 4.30 where we were taught a simple dance routine to the theme music of Men in Black. This was good exercise and really good fun as we all kept forgetting what we were supposed to be doing!

All in all I enjoyed my day at Springs, but I don’t crave to repeat it in the near future.
