Advantages: Great small PA speaker

Disadvantages: Lacking Bass

Introduction
The Electro-voice SX300 PA speaker is an extremely lightweight PA speaker, but still delivers in both sound quality and volume as bigger and heavier speakers. I myself bought these speakers for use as monitors for my music studio, but since then I have used them for discos and other activities at my school, as they are easy to transport. I use these speakers with two EV bass cabinets and power them with two peavey power amplifiers. This rig is amazing for small gigs and vocal announcements in small-medium sized venues.

Construction
The SX300's are made mainly of plastic but they do have metal fixings on them to secure the whole cabinet. The speaker mesh on the SX300 is solid metal, not the cheap bendy stuff, and takes a lot of force to damage it. On one side of the cabinet is a handle, in my opinion it would have been better to have a handle on either side, as when you try to carry two at a time you sometimes end up bashing them off your legs. If there was a handle on both sides this would make this problem easier to fix. The Bottom of the SX300 cabinet also has a stand mount; this can be used to attach the speaker on to a regular speaker stand or to attach the cabinet over a bass cabinet. At the top of the cabinet there are small grooves, these are so that you can stack the cabinets directly on top of one another. Overall it's a solid cabinet that includes the necessities.

Style
The SX300's cabinet is styled to perfection. There are no sharp corners or edges, they are all beautifully rounded. The cabinet is painted a matt black colour but it is also available in white. It is quite an attractive cabinet as you can see the 12 inch driver through the mesh, and it has the open horn at the top. I'm not sure that I like the cabinet in white, but in the black it is very nice, and would look good at any event.

Sound Quality
Every speaker manufacturer promises great sound quality, and for a lot of them, that's just not true. Although the SX300's aren't the most expensive speakers, they do have superb sound quality. Electro voice promise that with the SX300 you get "Bright crisp highs" and "chest pounding bass" that lets the audience "feel the performance". They certainly got the "crisp highs" they wanted as these speakers are excellent for vocals, speeches or singing. However, I don't think the bass in these cabinets is great, they make great top-end speakers, but to get the bass you really need to get the bass subwoofers to go with them.

Specifications
I know how some people don't like to read specifications, but for the technical people, they are needed.
The SX300 runs at 300w continuously or 1200w at its peak. This is good for those high moments to really get a crowd going!
Dual neutrik speakon connectors are located at the back of the cabinet; these high quality connectors mean that with the right cables, no power will be lost from the amps to the speaker, as this is where most power is lost.
A 12 inch woofer and a compression driver make up the insides of the cabinet.
The woofer and driver are suspended inside the cabinet with layers of foam to protect it from damage.

If you would like any more specifications, go to the EV website.
Conclusion

The SX300 speakers are some of the best in there price range. They offer high power output and exceptional sound quality, in a stylish but secure cabinet. They cost around £800 for a pair, and that is not at all over priced. I would recommend these speakers to anyone from a small time DJ or band, to large PA companies that are looking for a small affordable speaker for either monitors or smaller gigs.
