These speakers are great; there is nothing more to really say.
What do you get for your money? You get a high-quality pair of speakers with floor spikes, removable front covers and a down-firing bass port for excellent response. To further enhance the quality you get from them, they are also bi-wirable which allows for separate amplifier outputs to power both the low-range and high-range frequencies.
I was lucky and got mine for £10 due to missing front covers, but I prefer them without anyway. Otherwise, expect to pay around £60 to £70 for a pair. Depending on where you purchase them, some come with rounded brass-turned spikes (like mine) and some come with shiny metal spikes.
When I got these home, I set them up in a room with a solid floor (not floor-boards) and tested some SACD audio through them. They were incredible, highs were clear as a bell and lows were deep and accurate. Despite their small size, due to a good wooden cabinet design (in a selection of colours/materials) and good quality drivers, you get powerful sound without any audible distortion.
Since you can pick what material/colour they are in from a small range, they are suitable for any home.
I first came across these speakers while looking around richersounds for some rear speakers for my newly aquired surround sound amplifier, that I had luckily bought from a friend for a beer! Best currency in the world!
These Eltax Monitor III's were on sale at the time I bought them (Christmas 2006) for £60 down from £130 and for that price they are superb. Some of you might be thinking that these aren't rear speakers or are too big for this purpose, which was my 1st thoughts towards them. However I bought these came home hooked them and was very pleased with my purchase.
The Eltax Monitor III's boast:
A downward fireing bass reflex system, which means that the bass port of the speakers is on the bottom, hence why they stand on spikes.
And also Birewire terminals.
The sound of these speakers has been superb for my use, as i said previously i use these as the rear speakers in my surround sound setup they are incredibly crisp. They provide a surprising amount of bass while not being too 'boomy' and still keeping the high end frequences crisp and clear.
These are also very good with music, I've also experienced them in a stereo setup using a stereo amp for use with music, and the sound was also very good, crisp highs and deep full lows.
The sound of the perfect harmony, as it all comes together. The Monitor III speaker is a bookshelf type hi-fi loudspeaker with downfiring bassreflex, biwiring and spikes included. "Grace, detail and musicality that belies the pricetag", screamed the British magazine WHAT Hi-Fi? - "Remember they are among the leading contenders in the budget price arena. Audition now."
