Advantages: The novelty design, being "waterproof", being compatible with all mp3 players
Disadvantages: The AAA batteries
Okay so I got given the iDuck speakers as a bit of a present, nothing serious. More of a quest to find out who could buy the most weird and wonderful gift
To my surprise the iDuck is actually really quite a useful product! It's been sitting happily in my kitchen. (I chose not to leave it in the bathroom)
The device itself is powered by AAA batteries, personally I'd have rathered it either had an internal, chargable battery, or ran off AA batteries. This is purely from the point of view of how cheap AA batteries are in comparison to AAA batteries. I have music playing all the time, and a few AAA batteries don't last that long.
It comes in two "parts", a duck and its egg. The egg plugs into the iPod (Actually, it will plug into anything that has the little headphone "jack", so any generic MP3 would work, even most mobile phones would work. anyway, the egg sends the sound to the duck, which, is waterproof, i've tested this in the sink and it seems to hold true, I'd be a bit apprehensive about leaving it submerged in a bath though. The battery compartment where the AAA's slot in seems pretty secure, though after a few changes of the batteries I can imagine it would get a bit loose and let water in.
As for the sound quality, it isnt bad, not the kind of thing you;d use for a party, but if you're just after some background noise then its great. Certainly, it is on parr with the majority of speakers that are suitable for the bathroom, since clearly they're all battery powered (no mains electricity devices in the bathroom).
Another nifty addition is the fact it has a built in FM radio. This works sufficiently, again, not amazing quality but it does the trick if you just want noise. Compared to the iPod sound, the FM radio tuner sounds a bit tinny, but this is understandable considering the Egg has no external aerial, if you remember the days when mobile phones had FM tuners, this is of a similar quality. Theres a bit of manouvering required to get an okay reception.
Overall, the iDuck is a wonderful novelty, I think its actually quite a good product that is useable, despite what the other review here states. I'd be most interested to see what other combinations the designers could come up with.
Summary: Good little bit of clever design.
