Advantages: Compact, big sound, wallet friendly, versatile, quality

Disadvantages: Make you want to buy a pair for every room in the house!

I have just bought the JBL Control 1 Pro speakers, the 2006 model.
The Pro series of the Control 1 is an uprated version of the consumer Extreme model and has slightly better specifications, such as a higher power handling capacity of 150 WATTs (75 W per speaker).

The newer versions of the Pro has the same characteristics, albeit slightly improved decibel handling from 87 to 89 db, and comes packaged with the wall mountings. Mine arrived without these but at a much discounted rate but I want to situate them on my bookshelves, so are worth shopping around for.

The sound is excellent, there is little to no distortion even at fairly high levels and well within even the most hardened, ear-deafening music lover's tolerance.

For most people, setting these up with a good amplifier to handle your discs, DVD player or TV will be an ear popping experience and little more would be required, lest one wanted a surround sound solution, in which case another couple of pairs of these and sub-woofer would provide a cheap but high end sound.

As they are so small, they can sit happily on your bookshelf unnoticed, which is the main reason I bought them, that and the fact that a set of Bose Acoustimass speakers were at least triple the price of these new and still well over double the price secondhand. The fact that so many audio professionals swear by these also tipped the balance.

They come in the standard black, usually the cheapest option, though Richer Sounds seem to have some of the non-pro 100 watt ones in silver for less than £50 occasionally, and for the freshest of freshness, they also come in white to match your iPod, though you usually have to pay the full price, or near enough, of £100.

All in all, there is very little to complain about with these speakers and it's a testament to their quality that they have been around for well over a decade used by DJ's and studio engineers all over the world, who will attest they are one of the best value speakers around.

Summary: Great bookshelf speaker, fantastic sound and superb value.
