Advantages: Cute, low price, good sound, portable, charges with USB
Disadvantages: None for us
When my eldest daughter who is 6 was given daddy's old ipod, it only took us a week or so before we realised that she probably wouldn't get the most use out if it with just earphones, so I set about looking for a fun docking station that would give her sufficient sound, be fun for her room, and didn't cost the earth. I was pleased to find the KitSound Penguin Speaker, and while it wasn't a docking station which I had originally searched for, I was happy that it would be sufficient for her needs and it sounded more than adequate in its capacities as a speaker.
To use it is simple, you plug your Penguin into your device (it is compatible with iPod's, the iPad 2/3, iPhone 3G/3GS/4/4S/5 and Android Devices) with the 3.5mm headphone jack and choose your music! Easy. This is why I was happy to buy it for my daughter. I didn't want to spend a fortune as at the end of the day she is 6 years old and extremely lucky in the first place to have one, but also I didn't want anything too complicated with too many buttons etc. I wanted something that she would be able to use without assistance after being shown how to use it, and she is more than capable of using this speaker by herself.
Although we bought this for my daughter, it has been known to come on several trips with us to various places! It came to a visit to the seaside in the height of the summer when we set up camp on the beach. The fact that it runs on batteries as opposed to mains electrics, means it can quite literally go anywhere with you. It's also made an appearance one evening when we had a power cut and we also sat around singing songs (the kids loved it!), all very Kumbaya! It charges via USB which is really handy as it can simply be plugged into a laptop or PC and quickly recharges.
At £9.99, you simply cannot go wrong with this speaker. The sound is excellent and really surprising from something which is quite a low price and so little! The fact that it's a quirky and novelty product, falsely gave me the impression that it wouldn't be any good as a speaker, but I was wrong. It really is quite a good quality product. The sound quality isn't going to win any awards and couldn't be compared to Bose (!), but it does the job. The sound doesn't distort and is clear.
At only 10cm tall, it is perfect height for my daughter. The little key ring clip on the top is surprising, I'm not quite sure on what occasion you would want to add it to a set of keys, however what do I know?!
Also available as a bunny, a panda, cool bear or funky DeadMau5 speaker which all retail at around £10 (except the DeadMau5 one which is around £20), to name but a few.
Perfect for children, or a gift for someone who loves quirky and fun items, the novelty of this speaker is obviously the fact that it is a little penguin! And a cute one at that!
A lovely little stocking filler for Christmas, that unlike other novelty items, it serves its purpose and does it well!
Recommended.
