Advantages: Good bass clarification whilst keeping the high end.
Disadvantages: Possibly need to buy some Mopads to avoid rattles etc.
The KRK RP range is a wonderful range of good quality speakers/studio monitors at a competitive price. The monitors come as a single unit so obviously you would need to purchase a pair of these monitors, keep this in mind when looking at prices.
The KRK's are powered monitors so the good thing with this is you don't need a power amp, they just plug into wall sockets and are powered this way. You will need some kind of audio box such as (the one I use) an M-audio Mbox into which to plug your monitors into, don't go thinking these are just your usual set of speakers for daily use, they are mainly for home studio use, but do double up as very good speakers to listen to music on.
The RP-5's offer a "punchy" bass and a very clarified high end sound.
The KRK's feature a dial on the back of the speakers to adjust the high end, so you can get the sound that you are comfortable with.
They also have a gain control, which is used to change the speakers volume.
The KRK's feature many different input options, - an unbalanced RCA - a balanced TRS or jack - and an XLR.
The 5 in RP-5 literally stands for the Diameter of the woofer. Therefore the higher the number, the louder the speakers and the better the bass clarification. I personally have the RP6 but I know from experience that the RP-5's are just as good quality and adequate for the home studio set up.
I would suggest buying with the speakers some Auralex Mopads which may seem quite expensive but are definitely worth it in the long run as they help with bass clarification and avoid rattling your desk.
These speakers have a very nice sound and are a bit more "bassy" than your average studio monitors at this price.
I would suggest Dolphin music as a good place to buy these speakers, give them a ring and they may even throw in some speaker cables, and money off Mopads, in my opinion a brilliant place to buy from, at around £239.99 for a pair they offer a highly competitive price. Enjoy.
Summary: A good buy for anyone who's looking to take mixing to the next level.
