The KRK RP-5 series of monitors represent the latest in performance in what is a mid level price range. Perhaps one of the most easily recogniseable pieces of kit available due to their trademark yellow composite cone, the RP-5 provides the bedroom DJ with the quality and accuracy needed, and as a result will help to maintain it's position as the unit of choice for recording studios.
The woofer is a 5in (hence the 5 in RP-5, the higher the number, the bigger the woofer) glass aramid composite finished in yellow, the Tweeter is a 1in Neodymium soft dome tweeter with ferro fluid. They are heavy weighing in at 8kg but are quite compact for what they deliver at a size of 28cm x 19cm x 23cm. The finish in a glossy plastic is available in the traditional black or limited edition colours in either white or red.
Performance wise the amplification is a 75w bi-amp whilst frequency response ranges from 53hz-20khz. Input is possible through XLR, RCA and 1/4in TRS. It comes complete with the standard one year gaurantee from the manufacturer.
Now i've had these about one year now and i'm still as happy with them as when I first installed them. True at a cost of around 3250 they were certainly a large outlay but for what they do, I would consider it a worthwhile investment. The sound is perfect, espescially the bass which is the main reason I purchased them. But that does not diminsh the clarity of the sound. Installaition is easy, just your typical plug a couple of wires in and you are away. No power amp is required, just a nearby socket for you to plug straight in.
They look great and deliver a sound that is far beyond their price range. But if you really want a recomendation of just how good they are then don't just listen to me. Next time you are watching MTV or some music channel and the Timbland track 'Give it to me' with Justin Timberlake and Nelly Furtado comes on, take a look at the recording studio and see what monitors the multi award winning producer and atrist is using. Then go and get yourself a pair. You won't regret it.
Summary: The perfect monitor for an acceptable price
