Advantages: Quick and easy to set up and use
Disadvantages: Low volume if volume is what you are after
My son, who is now 16, is a huge music lover having over 5000 tracks on his laptop. He has been very well educated in music having many favourites from all decades dating from the 60s, including all time classic artists such as The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Bob Marley, Jimmy Hendrix, The Doors, U2, Madness, The Police, Queen, Simple Minds, Tracey Chapman and Iron Maiden to the more modern greats such as Kings of Leon, Duffy, Stereophonics, Snow Patrol and Razorlight to mention a few. Having so many talented artists at hand to listen to he was becoming more and more frustrated with the quality and lack of volume (he believes music should be listened to at a very high volume!) from the built in speakers in his laptop. I decided to buy him a set of external speakers for his Christmas.
Again having my usual problems of a strict budget to stick to and a lack of technical knowledge I really just had to read description and judge for myself what I thought would be the best buy for the money I had.
Scouring through the pages of the Argos book I decided to settle for the Logitech LS11 speakers at a budget price of £17.59. Although I had never actually read a review for these particular speakers, any reviews I had read on Logitech Speakers seemed to be good for performance and installation.
The speakers themselves are approximately 6.4" x 3.35" x 3.2". They are mainly shiny black with a silver coloured metal frame, all in all quite compact and stylish looking. The left speaker is plain with the Logitech logo on it whilst the right speaker has a headphone jack, a CD player/MP3 player jack and a volume control situated on the front of it. Together the speakers give a peak performance output of 6 watts.
In the box along with the speakers was the power supply cable, the cables to attach the speakers to you computer and a very easy to follow instruction booklet. There was nothing at all difficult about setting up the speakers as they had plug and play capability, so basically we just plugged them in and they were ready to use. The first time you use them you should use your soundcard's mixer program in order to set the volume level and also to make sure the sound control is not set to mute. The soundcard properties can be accessed through the Control Panel menu.
**Performance Through Laptop**
My son and I were both very pleased with the sound quality the speakers produced. Probably not as loud as my son would have liked, but good sound quality nevertheless with little or no distortion. We felt they were a good added boost to the quality and volume levels produced by the built in speakers in the laptop.
**Performance Through MP3 Player**
Again they gave an excellent, good quality sound performance albeit at a fairly modest volume. We simply plugged the 3.5mm plug from the speakers into the MP3 player. Alternatively a 3.5mm connector from the MP3 player can also be placed into the jack on the front of the right speaker.
**Performance Through Headphones**
Again I can't complain at all about the quality of the sound from these speakers with little or no distortion. When using headphones the volume control on the speaker itself cannot be used. Volume control must be adjusted through your soundcard or MP3 player, although if I was listening to my MP3 player through headphones I wouldn't have them plugged into the speakers!
Overall I would give these speakers 4 stars. For the great price of £17.59 they performed well giving good sound quality with no distortion that I have noticed at all. They are great for listening to youtube clips and also for listening to music through, although do not give off the greatest of volumes (probably much less than my son would have hoped!), but performance wise they do exactly as they are supposed to, giving a little added boost to internal speakers or allowing you to listen to your MP3 music without the headphones. The only complaint I would have is there seems to be an endless amount of cables. Now that the speakers are in place in my son's room with the cables down to back of his unit they are not noticeable but when we took them out the box at first there just seemed to be so many cables.
These speakers are compatible with Windows XP and Vista and Mac OSX. They have a limited 2 year warranty and if you do have any problems or are in need of more information you can visit the Logitech website www.logitech.com. As we have had no problems I cannot comment on how helpful their support team is, however I did have a browse around their website and found it pleasant, informative and easy to use.
My son has now purchased himself a new Ipod Touch and is currently in the process of transferring all his music on to this and is now looking at docking stations with 90 watt speakers!!! (Thankfully they are a bit out of his price range!)
Good quality speakers but not if it is volume you are after.
