Asda Smart Price Sweetcorn
Disadvantages: Lacks in freshness and due to this also in flavour
I love sweetcorn and I always put it in pasta dishes and often in rice or with salad.
Whilst at university I cut a lot of corners in terms of finance and I bought a lot of Value products from the various super markets. Being a huge lover of sweetcorn when I saw Asda's Smart Price sweetcorn in a nicely sized 326g can and I decided to give it a try and bought a few cans.
Typically with all value products its tin is wrapped in a very basic label that tells you exactly what you get in the tin: Asda's Smart Price Sweetcorn. This is written in Asda's usual green and black front that makes the tin look dull, basic and least of all appealing. The tin its self also does not have a ring pull which is a bit of a drawback if you for some reason do not have a can opener (something many of my fellow students lacked), but being a regular and hands on cook, this was no problem for me.
Now me and my girlfriend have been known to eat sweetcorn out of the can, a usual occurrence when I am cooking for just the two of us, yet the Asda value sweetcorn lacks the delicious aroma of a more pricey sweetcorn. Due to this lack of aroma I never feel the desire to eat this value sweetcorn from the can and reluctantly put it into my food.
Now while I was at university the difference in taste at first did not bother me too much, yet when I realized I really did not have to scrounge for pennies as much I soon started buying the more pricey sweetcorn.
While Asda's Smart Price Sweetcorn isn't bad it does lack the freshness of its higher priced rivals, the smell and taste are far more basic and for a sweetcorn nut like myself it is a drawback. To the casual salad eater or someone less fussy I am sure this sweetcorn will please, it is cheap and it does still taste like sweetcorn.
Asda Smart Price Sweetcorn costs 33p for 326g, which works out at £1.27 per kg and the can itself is recyclable.
On a personal level I would give this product 2/5 but as I feel I am a bit of a sweetcorn Fascist I will give it a 3/5 as it does do its job it just lacks the flavor of more leading brands.
Summary: Worth a shot if sweetcorn is not a key priority in your dish, if you love sweetcorn give it a miss.
