Aunt Bessie's Homestyle Mash Potato
Disadvantages: Not that nice
==Aunt Bessie's Home Style Mash Potato==
Now I have seen this frozen mash potato before in various supermarkets and literally scoffed at the idea of it. I mean mash potato is so easy to make from scratch and I really do love my own made stuff that I found the idea utterly ridiculous. However being a working Mum I find it hard to fit in working, playing along with the daily chores of cooking and cleaning. So for this reason I drew my neck back in and decided to give this Aunt Bessie Frozen mash a try.
Of course the fact that it is currently being sold on a special offer in Morrison's for a mere £1 a bag did sway me slightly but I still understand this is way over price for the fact that it is just potato, butter, milk and salt and pepper. Considering I purchased a reduced bag of potatoes on the same day for 19p which will probably make a ton more mash than the whole of this bag. But still it is easy and for £1 worth trying.
The bag of frozen mash contains 650 grams of mash potato and this comes in small discs of the stuff. It states that a portion for one person is 5 "patties" (discs) and that in a microwave this needs a mere 3 ½ minutes to cook before a good stir up and a standing period of 1 minute. This is of course a lot quicker than it would be to peel, cook and mash my own spuds so it is winning on the time front.
Seeing as how Jack is only little I found 3 of the patties were more than enough for him and I am watching what I eat therefore I found 4 to be adequate for me. The cooking times given were correct and the potato was cooked evenly and satisfactorily. You could also opt to cook the mash in a saucepan if you so desire and this states it would need around 9 minutes of cooking time to be defrosted and cooked thoroughly. This is not something I tried because it takes more time so not working out more time efficient.
The look of the spud was at first glance a lot drier than I would usually do my own mashed potato and it didn't appear as creamy but that may have been down to the dry look of the stuff. I found the texture to be a little too dough like for me and even with mixing a little more warmed milk into the potato I still wasn't happy enough with either look or texture.
Not only this but I found it to be rather lacking in the taste department too and compared to my own a lot less flavoursome. I guess because it is frozen it doesn't have that fresh cooked vibe going on and thus making it a lot less desirable. It wasn't as bad as having a plate of Smash but I can't say that I was impressed enough to g out and buy it again. I think I would prefer to cook up a batch of my own stuff and freeze it just like Aunt Bessie has done. Jack didn't seem to mind it at all and when eaten with gravy or beans it was really not noticeable that the flavour was not as good.
We did eat the whole bag which didn't actually last that long as there are not that many patties in the bag as a whole. However I was rather glad when the bag went because I could get back to not being so lazy and cook up my own mash with the 19p spuds that I had bought!
All in all I would say that it is of course a nice cheap and very easy alternative to making your own but as with most things taking that little bit more time on something I.e. peeling, cooking and mashing yourself does make for an overall better flavour.
I think a score of 3 out of 5 stars is in order. Some may well think that the taste is nicer than their own mash but for me this one is definitely made for those emergency dinners when there really is no time. Thus I would only give it a recommendation for those times when there is no time!

Many thanks for taking the time to read.
