      cheap and tasty

Chtoura Garden is a Lebanese company that sell lots of food products, mostly various types of pastes made from pulses and vegetables. Baba Ghannouge is one of my favourites, coming in a long and relatively slender tin with a simple ring-pull on the top, it has an attractive purple label.

Baba Ghannouge is basically a paste made up from roasted-aubergine paste, sometimes it can include tahina too but this Chtoura Garden variety is completely pure, only mixed with lemon juice, salt and pepper. It has a very pulpy feel to it and a distinctive taste which I personally love, it's very wholesome and smokey - as many people love it as hate it though and it will not appeal to all.

I find that you can use it quite sparingly because the flavour is quite strong and it's quite filling, I recommend putting it either in to a pitta, preferably with salad too or using it as a dip for chips or an accompaniment to meat.

Of course you can also make this yourself and if you are an exceptional cook or have a lot of experience it should be far tastier than any of the tinned type. This is however, one of the best varieties and affordable ones that I've found in a can.
