It has started to get quite cold and rainy over the last few days and as I needed something to go with some chicken I found myself having a hankering for mashed potato which I definitely see as a comfort food for cold days. I bought this pre prepared mash rather than getting a full bag of potatoes to make my own mash as it is so much quicker and more convenient, and I would take too long to get through a full bag of potatoes. This mash was kept in a fridge in store and the packet advises to keep it refrigerated at home until using, which I did. The packet contains 500g of mash and is designed for two people. I am a bit wary of some ready meals and pre prepared foods, but I was happy to try this one as it clearly says it is made with only potato, butter, salt and pepper and nothing else, so has not been pumped full of chemicals and additives. I thought it should not be too different to normal home made mash, just more convenient. I paid £1.15 (reduced from £1.25) which might seem a lot considering the massive quantity of mash you could make yourself for that, but I felt it was a fair price for the convenience. It is very quick and easy to make and the instructions are clear. You just pierce the film, microwave for 3 to 3.5 mins depending on your microwave temperature, stir it, then microwave it for another 2 to 2.5 min. The only thing I would say is that it is really important to stir it very thoroughly. The packet did point this out but I obviously did not stir enough as mine was extremely lumpy at first. After more stirring it was fine and got a much nicer creamier and smooth consistency. The taste is nice, basically just like mashed potato as I know it. There was no extra untoward side tastes to it or any hints of anything artificial or added. Some ready mashes can be really watery and thin, but luckily this was not the case with this. The calories and nutrition are clearly marked on the packaging and it contains 219 cal per serving, which is half the pack. Overall for the convenience and taste I will give it 4 stars as I was happy with it and would buy it again.
I don't normally write food reviews but after having this for my tea I thought I'd give it a go. I was browsing through Tesco's frozen section when i seen this on offer i normally but buy any of the Tesco finest as there products are normally quite expensive but couldn't resist as i love mash potato. I cooked it for my tea tonight with vegetables and chicken and have to say I thoroughly enjoyed it. I wasn't expecting it to taste that nice as prepared meal aren't normally that nice. The mashed potato had a very creamy texture and no lumps i was pleased with lol. The potato just melted in my mouth with every bite, the potato looked very appetizing with the way it was presented. It has quite simple packaging the cardboard sleeve has a picture with the mashed potato on and all the cooking instructions and additional nutritional information you need. The potato was stored in a black carton so can be cooked in microwave and oven. The cooking instructions are quite simple you can cook it in the microwave for 10 minutes depending on your appliance or for 25 minutes in the oven, so all in all theres no mess and quite easy to cook. Id definitely recommend this product to anyone who likes mash potato without the fuss of cooking it. I don't think I'd but this all of the time because of the price however i did like how quick it was to cook. thank you for reading my review
The mash is in a black circular pot which is suitable for use in the microwave or in the oven & this has a clear film lid which is to be peeled off or stabbed a couple of times with a fork (depending on how you are cooking the mash). It has a cardboard sleeve over it which will show you the nutritional information, cooking information etc as well as having a nice picture of some lovely looking mash with a nice knob of butter melting on top. We cooked this in the oven for 25-30 minutes on 190 degrees and stirred it a couple of times throughout just to make sure that all of the mash was piping hot when served. It can also be cooked in the microwave for 7-9 minutes depending on the wattage of your microwave. This makes it an ideal part of a meal to just throw in and forget about while you prepare the rest of your meal. The mash was very creamy and with a little butter added it tasted fantastic. It was lovely and smooth and I did not encounter any lumps at all (and I did not hear of anyone else finding any and the kids will generally complain about anything!). Everybody thoroughly enjoyed the mash, myself included and it was lovely not to have to peel, chop & cook potatoes and then mash them myself. It was not quite as nice as fresh homemade mash but then it's a convenience food and it certainly is convenient. 100g of mash has 87 calories & 3.5g of fat so it's not too bad. This 850g pot is available from Tesco for £1.94 and when we purchased it it was on offer for £1.00 now this is available 2 for £3.00 until 19/05/2009. If you are looking for something that is quick and easy then I would definitely recommend this as the 850g pot managed to feed two adults and three children and I was happy with my portion size. There was no complaints in my sister's household about the quality of the mash or the amount everybody had so I would definitely recommend this product. I am rating it 4/5 as I don't think it tastes quite as nice as my own fresh mash.
