Tesco Value Chopped Tomatoes in tomato juice.
I have been trying to cut down the cost of my weekly food shop by downgrading to 'Value' products where possible. I had been planning to make spaghetti bolognaise and Chilli during the week, and needed to buy some tinned tomatoes as a base for my sauces for these dishes. They are a lot cheaper than the branded tins and at the time of writing this they cost 33p for a 400g tin. This is a great price when compared against other brands which can cost up to £1.25 per tin!
The packaging
These tomatoes come packaged in a bog standard tin. No frills - so you'll need a tin openner. The labelling is the recognisable Tesco Value colours with red, ble and white.
The label around the can contains an image of the product inside, which isn't particularly clear but I'm sure everyone knows what chopped tomatoes look like! As with most food products these days, the tin also displays the calorie, sugar, fat, saturates and salt content. There are 68 calories per 400g can so if you wanted to have these on toast as my partner likes to do, it's a low calorie meal. They are also suitable for vegetarians as you would expect.
There are also directions on how to cook the product, along with ingredients and storage guidelines. Once opened the tomatoes can be kept in the fridge for up to two days, which is handy if you do not need to use them all at once.
They have a long shelf life of approximately a year.
The contents
The tomatoes inside have been roughly chopped and are covered in a tomato juice, which adds to the flavour as well as keeping the tomatoes fresh. The juice is a little runny and can spill if you open the tin too roughly so watch your clothes!
They have a nice a pleasant fresh taste to them and not at all bitter, they are also very red in colour and don't look pale.
My opinion
Tesco Value chopped tomatoes (in tomato sauce) have proved to be extremely versatile and can be used as a base product for so many meals. Due to this, they are a great buy and I don't see why you'd want to spend more when you'd normally be adding your own herbs to them anyway.
The tin, like most, can be fully recycled which is a bonus for me as I like to recycle everything I can.
Overall these are a great buy and a cheap addition to many meals. I always pick up a couple of tins whilst shopping and will continue to do so.
Summary: A great buy and handy to keep in the cupboard
