Advantages: Just as good as more expensive kidney beans
Disadvantages: A few beans in the tin were hard or squishy
One of my fave things to make is chilli con carne and I only like home made versions of this meal because out of a packet, tin or box it doesn't taste the same. It's mega simple to cook and now I've found out how good these Tesco Value kidney beans are it's loads cheaper than it used to be too!
These cost 19p for a 400g tin, they come in water so when they're drained you'll get 240g of actual beans but I use some of the water to make the chilli sauce up so I get all the goodness that has leaked out of the beans while they was being stored.
The beans are a good size, they're not all a standard size like in the more expensive tins but that doesn't bother me because they're going to be mixed in the chilli anyway. They have got a nice deep colour and look glossy, actually they don't look any different from tins of kidney beans that you pay loads more for except for the different sizes of the beans.
I'd never eat one before cooking it but that's just me, my mum added the leftover ones to a salad the other day and she said they was just as good as any other kidney beans. There was something soooooo disgusting about watching her eating cold kidney beans that I went into the other room until she'd finished! lol
In the chilli these were wicked. They've got a firm but soft texture, in the tin there was a few dodgy ones that were either too hard to squidgy inside and that put me off a bit but for the price I reckon I'd half expected that. I will deffo carry on using these cheapo kidney beans for every day cooking but I think if I was cooking for a visitor or special meal I'd buy a branded tin because the texture of the beans is more consistent.
These cook through good and don't dry up or anything, the taste of the chilli sauce got into them and gave them a yummy flavour. Like I said I wouldn't eat these beans on their own so can't tell you EXACTLY what they taste like, they're wicked in chilli though and next time I do a bolognese I'm going to throw a few in to give it a bit of an extra texture.
Recommended...... dead cheap and why not?????
