Absolut Mandrin is part of the Absolut fruit based vodkas and was first introduced in 1999. The vodka comes in an opaque glass bottle with a pull off silver and cork stopper that is easy to use and dose not leak. A 70cl bottle is 40% abv and is currently retailing on Amazon for £16.99. The bottle is decorated with black and orange writing describing the product and the country of origin; Sweden. The vodka itself is clear in colour and the consistency of water. On opening the bottle you will be greeted with strong citrus and orange scents and although strong the smell is not overly alcoholic or off putting. Absolut Mandrin is made from water and winter wheat and has no added sugar, mandarin is the main ingredient in terms of fruit, though orange and other citrus fruits are added to give it its overall complexity of flavour. On tasting the vodka, I tend to drink it served over ice, you will taste smooth vodka with a heavy hit of mandrin that has a nice sweetness to it and it does not taste unnatural, it finishes with a hint of citrus and goes down well. I also sometimes drink it with diet lemonade, as a long drink and I find this very refreshing, especially in the summer. You can also use the vodka in a variety of cocktails such as a twist on the original Cosmopolitan by using 4 parts absolut mandarin, 3 parts white cranberry juice, 1 part orange liqueur and 1 part fresh lime juice, this is not for the faint hearted and is a strong hit of both flavour and alcohol, but nice for a change. Overall I would recommend this drink to those that firstly like vodka and also those that enjoy fruit flavoured drinks, it is a smooth, well balanced vodka, that is versatile, in that it can be drunk on its own, mixed to make a long drink or used in cocktails. It is also well priced. Happy drinking!
I received a bottle of Absolut Mandrin for my Birthday earlier this year. Having never tried Absolut Vodka before I was a little unsure of what to expect, as I knew very little about it, other than that I had seen it in shops and bars before, and that there are a lot of different flavoured vodka's available in the Absolut range. Absolut is actually a Swedish vodka, which is produced in the south of the country in the Skåne province. As mentioned above Absolut have a large range of flavoured vodkas including: Absolut Peppar Absolut Citron Absolut Kurant Absolut Mandrin Absolut Vanilia Absolut Raspberri Absolut Apeach Absolut Ruby Red Absolut Pears Absolut Mango Absolut Berri Acai Absolut Wild Tea Absolut 100 The Absolut Mandrin as you may have guessed is a mandarin flavoured vodka which comes in the usual stylish Absolut vodka bottle, but with lots of orange colouring on it to display the fact that this is the Mandrin vodka. This particular flavour was first introduced back in 1999, and so has been available for around 13 years now, proving that it was a successful addition to the range. It is a premium vodka with a 40 % alc/vol strength, and as such attracts quite a high price compared to the supermarket own brands. It generally retails at about £18 - £20 for a 70cl bottle, and is available from most supermarkets and off-licenses. I am not a massive vodka drinker, and only really touch the stuff when I am away on holiday, but I have to say I really enjoyed this bottle of Mandrin flavour vodka for a change. It does have a strong scent and flavour of mandarin, orange and citrus to it, which is tangy and fruity on the tongue at first, before that fades away, and the strong taste of the vodka replaces it. It is made from natural ingredients, and is unusual in the way that it doesn't contain any added sugar, unlike most other flavoured vodkas. This removes the sickly sugary taste associated with other flavoured vodka drinks, and instead offers a smooth and subtle flavour. I tried it neat at first to get an idea of the real flavour, by having a small shot glass of it, but to be honest it was too strong for me to drink like that, so I consumed most of the remainder of the bottle (not in the same night) by mixing it with various things such as coke, lemonade, or orangeade. It does make a really nice fruity long drink, with an added kick to it. My favourite way to drink it is in a long glass with ice, with about a quarter of a glass of vodka, and the rest filled with cold orange pop such as Orangina, Tango, or Lucozade. Overall it is a nice drink, and it has inspired me to try a few other flavours from the range over the coming months as and when I get the change to. Thanks for reading. © L500589 2012
WHAT IS IT? A mandarin favoured vodka from Absolut. THE FLAVOUR? This has got a very strange taste because it tastes like vodka that has been mixed with orange juice but the vodka is neat so the mandarin flavour is weak it the vodka is as strong as always. It's a smooth vodka but still needs to be mixed and the only mixer that works is orange juice with this one and that hides the mandarin flavour anyway. WHAT I THINK This is nice vodka but I do not think that mandarin is a very good flavour to add to the vodka because it too similar to the most common mixer juice. When I had a glass neat the mandarin softened the taste of the vodka a bit but not enough for me to be able to drink it as smoothly as I could if it had a mixer. I mixed it with tonic water but that diluted the taste of the mandarin and made it taste like I had used squash to mix with it. The vodka is a smooth one and it is easy to drink, its not very sweet but the mandarin is nice and juicy. It is also quite strong so you can taste it strongly through the vodka so it is a pity that it isn't so nice after mixing the drink with juice or tonic water. It has got 40% alcohol in it and so is as strong as any other vodka. Some of the flavoured vodkas taste weaker but this one doesn't because the mandarin flavour isn't so soothing as other flavours in the Absolut range of flavoured vodka. This vodka costs about £15 for a bottle and that is the same as other Absolut vodka. 3 Dooyoo Stars.
Everyone has heard of Absolut vodka, and has probably tried at least one of the flavours, even if it's just the unflavoured vodka. Absolut is a Swedish vodka, and is produced near Åhus, in the province of Skåne, in southern Sweden. Which funnily enough is the province in which we used to live. Absolut do many different varietes; Absolut Blue - the regular unflavoured vodka - a 40% 80 proof vodka, Absolut Peppar - roasted jalapeno, green tomato and dried herbs flavour, Absolut Citron - lemon flavour, Absolut Kurant - blackcurrant flavour, Absolut Mandrin - orange and mandarin flavour mix, Absolut Vanilia - vanilla flavour, Absolut Raspberri - raspberry flavour, Absolut Apeach - peach flavour, Absolut Ruby Red - grapefruit flavour, Absolut Pears - pear flavour, Absolut Mango - mango flavour, Absolut Berri Acai - a blend of acai, blueberry and pomegranate, Absolut Wild Tea - black tea and elderflower flavour, and Absolut 100 - a 50% 100 proof vodka. I've tried many different flavoured vodka brands, and the Absolut range are definately my favourite, I've actually tried all of the Absolut flavours. I guess that makes me sound like a bit of a lush! Absolut have a wide range of flavours, and all of them bar one (the Absolut Peppar) are delicious. The 'Mandrin' or mandarin is definately one of my favourite flavours, and one that we buy fairly often, I definately sound like a lush now! Absolut Mandrin was launched back in 1999, and it was the fourth flavoured Absolut vodka to be launched. It is apparently one of the most popular Absolut flavours, and I can definately see why as it's absolutely delicious. Unlike a lot of other flavoured vodka ranges, the Absolut flavoured range doesn't contain any added sugar, therfore they are not too sweet, you just get the true taste of the relevant flavour. Absolut Mandrin has a very distinct orangey, citrussy flavour and aroma. It is quite an intense orange hit, you can smell it instantly when you open the bottle, and also in your glass. This is a very fruity flavoured vodka, the mandarin / orange / citrus taste is unmistakeable. However it isn't sweet or synthetic at all, it's actually quite a smooth, mellow tasting vodka. I don't think that anyone could really dislike this, as it is a really pleasant tasting vodka, and orange is such a popular inoffensive flavour. If you like citrus fruits, oranges especially I think that you would love this. We certainly do anyway! This is the perfect vodka to drink either straight, on the rocks or with a mixer of your choice. It's a really easy drinking vodka due to the really pleasant taste. I think that it's delicious with diet coke and a slice of orange, or better still a segment of mandarin, it's like an alcoholic orangey coke. I also like it with mandarin juice or orange juice, it really gives the juice that extra orangey 'kick'. It's also nice with just tonic water or diet lemonade, again with a slice of orange or a mandarin segment. I especially like to use Absolut Mandrin in cocktails, it gives an interesting new twist to traditional cocktails, or it enables you to invent your own new flavoured cocktails. I especially like this to use this in a cocktail along with Amaretto, orange juice and cranberry juice. I think that the Absolut Mandrin is actually a really versatile flavour.
Absolut Mandarin is yet another flavoured vodka of the Absolut range. I often go to Revolution, the vodka bar chain, and they use Absolut as the base of all their flavoured vodkas. This, however, is from Absolut themselves. How does it rate when compared to the sublime Alpine Chocolate Vodka of those funky red bars? Well, there are two things that you pick up immediatley on tasting it; 1. It does taste very much like mandarins. The flavour is almost spot on, with the sweetness of the mandarin, combined with the tartness of oranges, giving it an authentic flavour. Obviously, the fact that it is vodka based means that the overpowering flavour of alcohol soon creeps in, but this is to be expected. 2. It is most definatley alcoholic. No messing about with subtle flavours, it's whoosh with the mandarin then almost immediatley the burn of vodka. Whilst the flavour is pleasant, somehow the vodka seems more rough than normal Absolut, much harsher on the throat. This detracts from the experience slightly, but after a few shots I'm sure this would be soon forgotten! So, the drink is probably suited for either making super-high strength, eye-brow singeing cocktails, or just as a shooter before another, smoother drink. Sipping it is almost impossible when sober, unless you have taste-buds of steel. Overall, if you want orange/mandarin vodka, perhaps the old-fashioned ways are just as good. In a taste test (carried out with the help of unusually willing test specimens) against normal vodka in orange juice, the Absolut Mandarin came second with 3/4 people prefering the vodka + orange.
As most vodka connosieurs will be aware, its hard to go wrong with Absolut (except blackcurrant, oh dear, I'll let them away with that) Their clever quality advertising reflects the quality of their product. The mandarin flavour represents a welcome and unique change for Absolut. The flavour is pleasant without being too sickly and strong. It somewhat masks the vodka flavour for those who are not normally keen on vodka. Absolut mandarin is best mixed with lemonade for a favourable drink fusion. Unfortunately it cannot be mixed with too much else, as the flaour of coke is no complimentary, and it clashes with orange juice. Iimagine it would compliment tonic quite well for those who ike tonic. And yes it is a distinctly different taste from orange, which makes it even more unique. Be careful not too have too much at once or the unique taste could become less favourable.
The vodka is good, I was pleasantly surprised that the mandarin flavour was realistic and not too sweet. It is a true mandarin taste, rather than just orange. mix with Absolut Citron to have a citrus burst! As usual with Absolut, you can taste the quality in the vodka. It is much smoother, less artificial and more pleasant to drink than other cheaper brands. If your previous experience of vodaka has been mixed with coke or orange juice, then you don't really know vodka. Because the purity of Absolute is so much greater than cheaper brands, there are less chemical preservatives so it is less likely to give you severe hangover effects. As it comes close to 40% abv it will also get you drunk more quickly than other beverages.
