Absolute Peppar Vodka
Disadvantages: waaaay too hot and spicy, odd taste
Everyone has heard of Absolut vodka, and has probably tried at least one of the flavours, even if it's just the unflavoured vodka. Absolut is a Swedish vodka, and is produced near Åhus, in the province of Skåne, in southern Sweden. Which funnily enough is the province in which we used to live.
Absolut do many different varietes; Absolut Blue - the regular unflavoured vodka - a 40% 80 proof vodka, Absolut Peppar - roasted jalapeno, green tomato and dried herbs flavour, Absolut Citron - lemon flavour, Absolut Kurant - blackcurrant flavour, Absolut Mandrin - orange and mandarin flavour mix, Absolut Vanilia - vanilla flavour, Absolut Raspberri - raspberry flavour, Absolut Apeach - peach flavour, Absolut Ruby Red - grapefruit flavour, Absolut Pears - pear flavour, Absolut Mago - mango flavour, Absolut Berri Acai - a blend of acai, blueberry and pomegranate, Absolut Wild Tea - black tea and elderflower flavour, and Absolut 100 - a 50% 100 proof vodka.
I've tried many different flavoured vodka brands, and the Absolut range are definately my favourite, I've actually tried all of the Absoult flavours. I guess that makes me sound like a bit of a lush! Absolut have a wide range of flavours, and all of them bar this one - the Absolut Peppar, are delicious.
Absolut Peppar was launched in 1986, it was the first flavoured vodka that Absolut launched, it was also the first flavoured vodka in the world. Apparently the pepper flavour was chosen since vodka and pepper are the main ingredients in a Bloody Mary, and it was intended to make things easier for bartenders and fans of Bloody Marys, they could now make instant versions of the drink
As with all of the Absolut flavours, Absolut Peppar is made exclusively from natural ingredients, and unlike most other flavored vodkas, it doesn't contain any added sugar.
To be honest I would never in a million years have bought Absoult Pepper under my own steam, the flavour doesn't appeal to me in the slightest, and I don't like Bloody Marys. It was my husbands decision to try this. After trying it I was proved right, I didn't like it, and he didn't actually like it either!
Absolut Peppar is VERY VERY hot and spicy and it has a distinct character of green bell, chilli and jalapeno peppers. It is obviously a savoury taste, and this was actually really quite odd. The fact that this was VERY VERY hot actually made my eyes water whilst drinking this!
We tried this various ways; neat - this was the worst, it felt like it was going to blow your head off! my tongue and my throat were on fire for absolutely ages! With a mixer - the flavour is way too powerful even with a mixer, it completely overpowers the mixer and all that you can taste is the hot peppery vodka. And in cocktails - this was the best way, just! depending what you mix it with then it is occasionally drinkable (well my husband did, I still couldn't!)
I have to admit though that I absolutely hated it, the flavour was way too strong and powerfull for me. I also didn't even like the taste, maybe if I had liked the taste I may have been able to tolerate it. I could taste the strong peppery flavour for ages afterwards, even after brushing my teeth, it's bringing back horrible memories writing this review!!
My husband didn't mind the heat, but he didn't really like the taste, he said that it had a weird synthetic taste to it.
I can honestly say that we will not be buying Absolut Peppar again!
