Finlandia, the vodka of the Finns
Member Name: europe-chick
Disadvantages: expensive if not on offer
We first discovered Finlandia Vodka on a city break to Helsinki quite a few years ago. We were drinking it in various bars and restaurants throughout the trip, we liked it so much that we bought a bottle from the duty free on the way back home, and we've continued to buy it ever since.
As the name would suggest Finlandia is a Finnish vodka. Finlandia is made from pure, untouched glacial water which requires no additional filtration, this creates one of the purest vodkas on the market, Finlandia is made using the finest Finnish grown six-row barley which is grown over the long summer nights under the Midnight Sun. It is produced and bottled in Finland.
Finlandia vodka is available in the classic unflavoured 40% alcohol version, and also several different flavoured versions. The flavoured versions of Finlandia vodka are; cranberry, lime, mango, grapefruit, tangerine and blackcurrant. The bottle design (by a Finnish designer - obviously!) of Finlandia vodka is called 'glacial ice', and the design is meant to evoke melting ice.
Finlandia vodka is described as being a balanced, neutral and crisp tasting vodka, ideal for premium vodka cocktails and drinks, and this is a really accurate description I would say. It does have quite a crisp, clean taste and finish, and it doesn't overpower your mixer, or any other spirits that you choose to pair it with. I normally find most vodkas have quite a strong harsh taste and leave a fairly unpleasant aftertaste, however Finlandia vodka doesn't have that strong harsh taste it's much smoother and inoffensive I guess.
I don't normally like unflavoured vodkas, even with a mixer, I normally have to hide the taste of unflavoured vodkas in a cocktail along with other spirits and mixers. I do however really like the unflavoured Finlandia vodka, obviously not neat, but I do like it with just the one mixer as opposed to adding two or three other items and turning it into a cocktail.
This is perfect when served chilled, either on it's own if that's your preference (my husband likes it this way - just served over ice), or when mixed with your favourite mixer or in a cocktail. If I'm not using this in a cocktail then I actually just like it with slimline tonic water, and to say how much I dislike other unflavoured vodkas that's actually high praise indeed for the Finlandia vodka!
Finlandia vodka is available in most of the major supermarkets, and it's normally around £17 for a 70cl bottle. I added a bottle to my online Ocado shop recently though when it was on offer at just £14.
