Advantages: tastes lovely
Disadvantages: completely potent
Before you read on, please believe me when I say that this sort of thing doesn't happen often!!
A couple of years ago, my kids were all at their Gran's in Scotland for a week. I was free, free, free!!
I went out for lunch with a good girlfriend of mine to a really nice pub in Newcastle, County Down called Quinn's.
We had a lovely, civilized bar lunch, and I even pushed the boat out and had a nice glasss of claret with it. I felt really guilty for drinking in daylight hours, but as you will discover when you read on, I soon got over the guilt factor.
My husband rang me on my mobile and said he was going to be late home. I told him where i was, and he made the mistake of telling me to go ahead and have a couple of drinks, after all, it's not often I don't have the ankle-biters to look after!
We got a bottle of the claret we has sampled, and seemed to get a taste for this daylight drinking lark.
The barman was a frien of my friend, and he asked if we'd ever tried Goldsclager. I'd never heard of it, let alone drank it. Apparently, I was told, it was a schnapps type drink. Cinnamon flavoured, sweet and spicy, with little fleks of gold through it. I thought, feck it, something so pretty looking deserves to be sampled!
We got a shot each, and I gingerly took a sip of it. I was immediately struck by the warm feeling running from my throat down to my stomach. The taste was delicious. This surprised me, as I'm not a spirit drinker.
"Another one?" my friend asked. "Oh go on then" said I.
Instead of a sip this time, we both knocked it back in one. That lovely warmth was fast spreading to my toes.
8 more "Oh, go on then" laters, and this woman was hardly fit to bite her own finger nails! It was now 3 o'clock in the afternoon.
I was completely p*s*ed. There wasn't even a little Jimminy Cricket on my shoulder scold
ing me. I don't think I really realised how far gone I was. All I remember thinking was that this Goldschlager stuff was really neat. It was the nicest tasting thing I'd ever tasted. To this day, it still is.
We got a taxi home to my house, and when I tried to boil the kettle for a lovely after lunch, civilised style coffee, I ended up going into a fit of lasughter that took over 15 minutes to get over and, I'm ashamed to say, resulted in a change of clothing being required!!
As well as cinnamony, sweet, spicy, warm & pretty to look at, please add potent. Not sure if it was because we drunk them so quickly, but I've never been reduced to a state like that in my life.
My husband arrived home later to find little old me snoring my head off, and not to be found concious again until late the next morning.
Oddly enough, I've never tried it again since, and when out for a bar lunch, I astick to coke!
One thing I noted with great pleasure, though, It didn't leave me with a hangover!
