I've enjoyed cognacs for some years now. I'm not religious about them and don't claim to be an expert on the subject. Having said that, I've drank a fair few in my time, be they VS, VSOP or XOs.
Hennessy make excellent cognac and along with Courvoisier are my favourite brand. When it comes to XO grade cognac though, I would say Hennessy are the clear choice. I still remember the first time I had the pleasure of drinking it. It actually suprised me how the rich flavour, sweet aroma and smooth texture came together to create such a wonderful drinking experience. When you bring the glass to your nose, you're met with one of the finests aromas in the cognac world. Soft vanilla and fruit fragerances mixed with the woody smell of the oak barrells it spent many years maturing in. I'd recommend drinking this XO neat. When drank at room temperature, the flavour really shines and the spices in it come through more clearly. With a drink of this quality, it'd be a shame to try and finish a glass hurriedly before the ice melts and waters the flavour down. Also worth note is the presentation of the bottle. The box it comes in is nice but you won't be keeping it in the box once opened so it's a good that the bottle is so pleasing. It's an interesting shape and the glass is embossed with a subtle grape vine design, apt and tactful.
Sure, it's several times more expensive than your usually low level cognac, but it provides such a rich experience that it really doesn't seem so costly. If you can pick a bottle up in the duty free, all the better. Sometimes, kicking back in the evening with a glass of Hennessy XO is the only way to relax.
This is an affordable Hennesy Cognac to drink not quiet everyday but on that special occassion when a first class cognac is what's required. Smooth on the palet with a great scent. Perfect with a Cuban and served in a crystal cognac glass, hopefully Waterford. The Hennessy's were from Ireland !Prices 7 to 10 pounds a measure or 70 for the bottle depending were you are but worth it after a beautiful meal or an evening by the fireside. I've had many that way, what a way to put the day to rest.Geoff. Moira. Ireland.
