Red Square Vodka
Advantages: Tastes good, price, lots of options
Currently I am not a big drinker. I am on various medication which you shouldnt drink on so my nights out have decreased substantially from a couple of years ago! I have a few favourite tipples which include Southern Comfort and Lemonade, Jagermeister and you cant beat a good shot! However, vodka is probably my most consumed alcohol and it probably is my favourite because it can be bought anywhere, can be mixed with anything and most people can drink vodka so if buying it to drink at home or a party with friends it is an easy drink that will appeal to most people.
I have never been brand loyal to vodka. When I was much younger I would get whatever I could get my mitts on but these days I do prefer to go for a branded product as I am absolutely terrified of being sick and for some reason in my mind buying a brand means less chance of throwing up! I know, absolutely false but thats my theory!
I often buy Smirnoff but I would say around half of the time I buy Red Square. I buy Red Square because it is a very reasonable price but also high quality for a spirit which is going to be mixed in my opinion. If you are a vodka conessieur then I imagine this would be a bit low quality for you but for me its fine.
The brand can be found in a few different sized bottles including 70cl and 1 litre. Currently I can only see the 70cl variety on the Asda website and that is selling for £10.97 which I think is a very reasonable price. This is the bottle that I currently have in my cupboard.
The label has changed since Dooyoo added their picture and the vodka now shows a bright red square with the brand detailing on the front and a bright red cap and neck etc. At a very quick glance you could possibly mistake it for Smirnoff I suppose but most vodkas seem to follow the red branding.
The vodka is pure 37.5% vodka which is standard for vodka bought in supermarkets and pubs, clubs etc. A standard measure which will provide you with one unit of alcohol is 25ml so if following these guidelines then the bottle would last for 28 drinks which puts the vodka at less than 40p per serving which is excellent value for money when you consider you would pay around £2.40 in the lower priced pubs and around £5 in nightclubs.
However, I dont tend to measure out my shots so it rarely lasts that long! I imagine I end up giving doubles all the time but I dont know for certain as I only ever drink when I know I wont be driving so units arent too much of an issue for me.
One day last summer me and my friends had a half bottle of this, a whole bottle of this and a whole bottle of peach schnapps so around 175cl in total. There were three of us in total...first I was sick, then Katie was sick...only one of us was fine! So if being drank in excess then it is likely to make you a bit poorly!
The vodka can be used in a manner of ways, I mainly use it with a mixer or cocktails. I never drink it straight as I dont think it would taste very nice. However, I often get a strong taste of the vodka when I reach the bottom of my glass. It has a bitter but smooth taste. It doesnt burn the back of your throat but it does certainly have a kick. I think the vodka is high quality as it doesnt leave a bitter aftertaste like cheaper vodka does. When mixed with drinks it provides a slightly different flavour with the mixer providing most of the flavour and the vodka providing a sort of dull background flavour which is quite heavy.
Here are a couple of my favourite cocktail recipes which I have often used red square in:
Sex on the beach:
Ingredients: 2 shots red square (or 4...), 2 shots Archers (or 4...) approx 250ml cranberry juice, 250ml orange juice and crushed ice.
Method: 1) Fill a pitcher so it is around 1/3 full with ice.
2) Add the alcohol
3) Add the cranberry juice followed by the orange juice
4) Stir and voila...you have your very own sex on the beach!
Ingredients: 2 shots red square, 2 shots Archers, 250ml cranberry juice and crushed ice.
Method: As above without the orange juice!
These are both extremely tasty, sex on the beach is my favourite cocktail and my best friends is woo woo so this works well for us as we usually have one of each!
I really like red square. I think it provides a quality vodka that you can trust and it is a very reasonable price. Definitely recommended.
Summary: High in my spirits!
