Advantages: A versatile spirit which goes well with many mixers
Disadvantages: Only if too much is consumed
Smirnoff is a brand of vodka owned and produced by the British company Diageo. The Smirnoff brand began with a vodka distillery founded in Moscow by P. A. Smirnov (1831-1898), the son of Russian peasants.
Smirnoff products include vodka, flavoured vodka, and malt beverages. ~~~
Smirnoff Vodka is said to be the best-selling brand of vodka worldwide and so I am certainly not alone in enjoying this drink.
I have been drinking Smirnoff Red Label vodka (socially) for many years now. I first sampled vodka when I was in my teens and then I used to drink it with lime juice cordial. But the lime cordial as my chosen mixer didn't last for very long and for years my usual and favourite way to dilute this spirit has been with lemonade.
I don't often drink spirits indoors; usually if I fancy a tipple at home it will be a glass of wine, red being my favourite, or if I'm thirsty I will choose a glass of shandy or perhaps a Bailey's liqueur but, over the Christmas period, if at a party or a pub, then vodka is my preferred drink. I wouldn't exactly turn my nose up at most brands of vodka but I have to say that Smirnoff is definitely my favoured brand and the one I choose to buy.
It seems to be the fashion now that most females, and quite a lot of males, drink wine at parties and because of this I often find at these parties that vodka isn't supplied. I too enjoy wine but if I think I'm likely to consume more than a small glass or two then I find Vodka , for me, is a safer choice. This is because with vodka I know in plenty of time if it is starting to make me tipsy and I will stop but, if I'm drinking wine and have more than the one or two glasses I won't feel like partying, more like going home to sleep! I usually take a small bottle of Smirnoff vodka to parties now so that I can enjoy my favourite alcoholic drink.
I'm choosy over the vessel my drink is served in. When I'm throwing a party I don't generally use plastic beakers. If I've invited lots of guests and think I might be short on glasses then I would much rather buy value glasses from supermarkets, or I have been known to buy some from charity shops rather than use plastic. This fussiness with glasses is because I believe that wine, beer and spirits taste much better in a good 'proper' glass.
I find that most pubs seem to serve Smirnoff vodka yet a glass of vodka and lemonade, in my opinion, tastes different in different pubs even if Smirnoff is the brand served. For me, the perfect vodka and lemonade is served in a straight glass with a generous measure of sparkling lemonade with ice and a slice of lemon added.
Other ways to serve Smirnoff is with the lemonade and ice but a splash of lime juice and either a slice of lemon or lime, or a slice of both.
Another popular mixer to complement Smirnoff vodka is cola, again best, I think, with lots of ice and a slice.
Also orange juice blends well with vodka as does tomato juice and tonic.
Smirnoff is definitely a very versatile spirit and can be used as a base for many cocktails including a Cosmopolitan, Harvey Wallbanger, Screwdriver, Black Russian, White Russian, Bloody Mary, Long Island Iced Tea and one my husband might like to try is...Pink Floyd.
I think I might be tempted to experiment and create a vodka based cocktail for Halloween. Let me think, it would have to be Smirnoff vodka, orange juice a splash of tomato juice, Tabasco? Oh, and a secret ingredient... You never know I could make my fortune here and, if not, at least get very merry trying!
I think that I like Smirnoff so much is because although I dilute it quite a lot (I like a long drink but not too strong) and with Smirnoff it has that 'kick' even when drunk with a mixer without it being too strong a taste. Also it is almost completely odourless which perhaps is why I don't find it sickly and I don't get bored with it either.
At this point though I will say that I could never drink this neat, and I cannot understand how anyone could, but I have seen this done. For me, drinking this without a mixer is NOT the way to enjoy Smirnoff!
Smirnoff vodka comes in different variations and sizes.
Smirnoff Red Label is 37.5% proof.
Smirnoff Red label Vodka can be purchased at the following supermarkets:
WAITROSE £18.00 (until: 06/11/2012)
Summary: This has been my favourite tipple for years
