Talisker 10 Years Old
Advantages: smooth,warming with peaty taste
Disadvantages: expensive and may be too peaty for some
I am not really a whiskey drinker, but occasionally I do enjoy a wee dram. We have been visiting the Isle of Skye for many years and know the Talisker distillery well. A few years ago whilst on the Island,I was offered a wee dram of Talisker by a friend. I accepted as I was keen to try a local offering and was pleasantly impressed by the taste.
Talisker whiskey is a single malt. There are various ages of the whisky available but the most common is the 10 year old malt. The distillery is situated in Carbost and commands a beautiful spot on the Island. There are tours available of the distillery where you can watch the process. These cost £5 for an adult with children from aged 8 charged half price. The tour includes a dram of whiskey and you will be given a discount voucher against the purchase of a bottle of whiskey from the well stocked shop. I love the fact that this whiskey is distilled on the Island .
The taste of Talisker is unlike any other Whiskey I have tried and will probably not suit everyone. It has a strong smoky/peaty taste and is sweeter than other Whiskeys I have tried. I like to drink it with ice as this dilutes the strong taste of peat. The taste comes from the fact that the water used in the distilling process flows over peat. I don't drink this whiskey very often, but whenever I do it reminds me of my beloved Isle of Skye. The whiskey is very smooth and gives a lovely warming feeling as you drink.
Talisker whiskey is available from most large supermarkets and Tesco have the 700 ml bottle on offer at present at £25.60. The alcohol content of Talisker is high at 45.8%,so a wee dram is enough to warm you !
