Advantages: trendy, variety of styles/colours, rock legends wear them
Disadvantages: cheap and nasty, badly made, sore feet
After seeing my Topman own brand shoes shredding up the more I put my feet in them, I decided to take the plunge and buy a pair of converse all star trainers. For years I'd seen students parading them around like handbags, with all the variety everyone had to have some. That was until last year, when all of a sudden overnight my fellow raggedy young guns put down their converse and put on their vans. With the tide changing, and now knowing I wouldn't just look like everyone else, I had to get some. I'd always admired their appeal.
I proceeded to enter the Schuh store before work but sadly they only had 3 colours of converse in, with black, navy, and white. I wanted some army canvas ones, maybe even tartan. The students had them, son where on earth were they getting them from?! Inevitably, I handed over the cash (£30) and bought the navy ones. I headed home with my bag and Big Mac in hand.
The smell of new shoes was fantastic as I took the converse out of their overly designed box and put them on. Without thinking anymore I walked off to work. But unfortunately, within one hour, my feet were sore. The hard soles were harder than any of the hard soles I'd felt before when I bought some new shoes. Even my Mikes (fake Nike) as a youngster had more padding than these. They were no where near as comfy as even the ordinariest of trainer.
I slipped them off after hours of walking with 2 blisters too greet. I can't deny I wasn't looking forward to wearing them the next day. But yes, they are incredibly stylish. Rock stars like Keith Richards probably wear them, heck I bet even Paul McCartney owns a pair.
(After doing a little research it turns out macca actually does. Take a look at this ad campaign for I-tunes- http://blogs.guardian.co.uk/technology/apple_macca -thumb.jpg)
After a few months of wearing the shoes they did soften up quite dramatically, as the soles molded to the shape of my foot. However, they did age quite considerably as well. Despite being only 3 months old the laces had already become ragged, and the tongue had torn a little.
Would I recommend these shoes though?
If you're looking for a stylish foot garment to match your character these could be the shoes for you. Thousands of different colours and designs can be found on converse.com, and there's even the ability to design your own for a little added fee. For me though, I can't seem to justify spending £30 on a shoe which would have probably cost 20p to make in china. Get yourself a piece of canvas and join it to a rubber soul and you can make them yourself. You'll get wet feet and sore ankles but you're in the company of Sir Paul. That can only be a cool thing right? Must be the rubber soul.
Summary: if practicality comes above style these arent for you
