Advantages: A Company That Always Delivers Quality And Performance
Disadvantages: Some Of The Top End Shoes Will Put You Back A Bit
My main sporting passions in sport lie in Golf, but I find myself writing my first golfing review after a month, so it may be obvious that we are currently in the off-season period still due to the often poor weather. But then in poor weather where is a golfer without a good solid pair of shoes, which is where Footjoy comes to the rescue. The company is an offshoot of Titleist and focuses on the non club side of golfing equipment such as shoes and gloves, both of which are probably the best on the market in terms of quality, but often on the more expensive end of the price range. I myself have in my five years playing golf owned two pairs of Footjoy shoes, with a couple of other brands in between, but after my stint on the other side I have returned to the Footjoy side of the fence and am I enjoying it.
At the current time I own a pair of Footjoy Dryjoys, a pretty basic pair of shoes costing me at the time £40, most of which was paid with my competition winnings. For a pair of good quality golf shoes with at least a one year waterproofing guarantee is pretty good, although I would always advise putting on a bit of spray on waterproofing after a stint of heavy use, as they can eventually begin to leak, regardless of quality. If we compare this to some of the other manufacturers shoes in the same quality range, we find ourselves pleasantly surprised with many such as Adidas and Hi-Tec, both respectable shoe manufactures charging similar or higher prices for their shoes. For instance a pair of basic traxion tours from Adidas will put you back around £40 and in all honesty they are sitting a bit lower on the quality end, as the cheaper alternative to the more expensive 360 models. So price wise, pretty good, but be prepared to fork over a few bob for a high end pair of shoes, although this is the case for almost any shoe manufacturer.
Now we come on to comfort and performance of the shoes, a very important factor considering that you will likely be hitting 80 or more shots in a round and walking a few miles in possibly very slippery conditions. For me, they are one of the more comfortable options, better than the Adidas shoes that I had beforehand in any case. The spikes, which for me are plastic, are solid and will keep you held to the floor, which for me is a big bonus as most of my power comes through my legs, thus putting a lot of pressure on my feet and a sturdy base is essential for a solid strike. Having had them for almost a year they have held up well, although a couple of them have lost some of their spikes, but I have seen no real drop in performance, but will probably replace them shortly anyway, which is quite cheap from most good sports shops. The base of the shoe is solid also and will keep for feet held flat to the floor to improve your stance at address. I have never found them to rub on my heel, although of course careful choice of size in this instance is a major factor.
Then we come on to the quality of the brand and whether you will be the envy of the club or looked down upon as you strut along on the course. Well, the shoes are well designed and as with most Titleist products, they stick to tradition but put it in a modern context. The choice of colours is limited if you simply buy from a pro shop as I did, where I picked white and black, the classic combination. From the website you can pick a huge range of options at a small extra charge, but if you are truly a style icon on the course you won't mind. The name is big and as such if you buy well you will be the envy of your golfing partners, but don't go overboard on price as my cheaper shoes are just as good as the more expensive alternatives.
Overall, Footjoy are a dependable company that will deliver quality whatever price bracket you choose to go down. The number of options, such as small names or pictures can be added to your shoes to make them a bit more personal, but then that is really only an indulgence for those who really want to. The shoes will deliver comfort and waterproofing for as long as you wear them, although as with any waterproof shoe, I would recommend purchasing some spray on waterproofing to boost the performance of it after a few months as it will slowly begin to fade and wear off. If you want quality buy Footjoy, I have tried others, but none as good as these.
Summary: Great Company With A History In Great Shoes, Trusted By The Pros And Trusted By Me
