Advantages: Good stability, great value, breathable, impact absorning
Disadvantages: Only suitable for those who require motion control/ stability
I bought these shoes a couple of years ago when I started training for the 10 mile Great South Run and they are still going strong.
Before I bought the New Balance W 857STs I went to a proper running shop to have my gait analysed- something which I would recommend to any budding runners. I was found to have low arches (flat feet in other words) which means two things. Firstly running shoes with a curved insole rub the arch and secondly I overpronate when I run. This means my feet tend to roll inwards as I run, which can lead to injury over time. But why is this relevant to this review? Well these trainers are ideal for people like me, who land on the outside of their foot and then roll inwards excessively.
These shoes are stability shoes- the inside mid-section of the sole is sturdy and inflexible, which naturally corrects overpronation. I can really tell the difference when I run in these compared to running in bog standard trainers- my knees feel less strained and I feel more balanced.
The New Balance W 857ST have a synthetic mesh upper making them really breathable and relatively light compared to other stability shoes. The also feature Abzorb technology in the heel and forefoot to help minimise impact- really useful if you do a lot of road running which can be very unforgiving on the joints. They are incredibly hardy- mine are still looking good after many miles in the rain, mud and on the treadmill.
When I bought these I was told that a runner should replace their shoes every 500 miles or so, which Iguess means I will need to replace these pretty soon. I will probably just go for a new pair of this style though as I really think they suit my overpronating style, and as you can currently buy them from £35 they are incredibly good value. They are also pretty inoffensive to look at- a combination of white, pale blue, grey and a little silver, with the classic NB New Balance branding.
Summary: I'll be investing in another pair.
