Advantages: Keeps you comfortable, stops chaffing and makes you look the part!
Disadvantages: None
I first brought a baselayer when I started to run half marathons last year. My brother has one and suggested that they may help me out in terms of comfort and performance. I decided to opt for a Nike one as some of the higher end baselayer, such as Skins were pretty expensive, and I didn't know if I'd take to them.
A baselayer is a tight-fitting under layer (I suppose you could wear them on their own, but you would need the physique for it!) that wicks moisture away from your skin, keeping your body temperature fairly constant (I.e. cool when it's warm, and vice versa) and helps guard against rubbing, as well as stopping muscle fatigue by reducing vibration as you train.
I used to suffer from sore nipples as a result of running for so long when I has looser-fitting clothes on. I used Vaseline and plasters to varying degrees of success. At some points, my nipples had even started to bleed if I was out for long enough due to friction and rubbing on my top (hey, I'm really sharing with you today!). After getting a baselayer, it all stopped. I've been using them for nearly two years and I've not had any problems in that department at all, which makes them worth their weight in gold on that basis alone. As an aside, I've recently brought a pair of baselayer shorts and they have stopped thigh chaffing as well, even after training for a marathon. All in all, well recommended to stop chaffing.
I've noticed a slight improvement in terms of my performance and general aches and pains after running have been reduced, as well as the fact that even slightly chunkier guys like me look pretty ripped in a baselayer! I might even start wearing it out under my clothes on a night out!
The garment itself is made from a variety of different materials in various patterns and panels to aid ventilation and moisture reduction. The top looks great and really makes you feel the part, as many top sportsmen wear similar clothing, which all helps when it comes to training!
The top is pretty long (almost too long) in terms of how far down your body it comes, which stops it riding up while you're out for a run, which is useful and the baselayers come in a variety of arm lengths and colours.
In conclusion, these Nike baselayers are relatively cheap, and if you do a lot of running (or sports in general I suppose) they are well worth the money in terms of keeping you comfortable and making you feel the part.
Summary: Essential peice of kit for distance runners

- 11/09/09 Raw nips. Ouch. Get them when I'm cycling. Might invest in a vest. Baselayer sounds cool in name alone. Yeah, I'm getting one. |

- 11/09/09 Yes, the sore nipples certainly dragged me in. The sleeveless ones are best, I think, particularly if you have the physique for them. |
