Berghaus Spectrum Neck Gaiter
by pmcds I'm not about to profess to be a keen walker or an expert mountain climber, which you may expect fall into the more intended target market of this product. I've had neck gaiters for years, and have always marvelled at just how much warmer I've felt wearing them. The only issue I've had at times has been when the weather gets wet and also ... how the gaiter stays up, but not with the Berghaus. The Berghaus Spectrum Neck Gaiter essentially does what other neck gaiters are designed to. It covers the neck and tucks into your top in order to maintain the warmth you may otherwise lose there. It's a fleece tube that goes on over your head, and is adjustable with a drawstring at the top to make sure it sits snugly against your neck. I like this, as it means it's suitable for everyone and doesn't have to be for one sized person. The gaiter is longer than your neck, but you don't have to fight with lengths of material - it's just long enough to keep your neck and under your chin warm and stretch down to under whatever top you may be wearing. There's no drawstring at the bottom, but this is a good thing and means that it's not snug against your skin. There's a small pocket of air that gets kept warm, allowing your body heat from your neck to sit there giving you a really nice sense of warmth. The fleece is a 200 midweight fleece, which doesn't mean a great deal to me other than it's designed not necessarily for walking in the Arctic, but certainly for coping with the frosty and snowy winters we've been having of late. The best part though is when it rains. Fleeces aren't designed to be waterproof and let the rain run off it, but they should maintain their warmth when wet, and that's exactly what this one does. I've spent many a cold evening just out caught in a shower wearing this, and my neck has stayed warm despite the gaiter getting wet. You can feel the wet to a certain extent depending on how heavy and constant the rain is and how wet the gaiter gets of course, but ultimately it does the job very well in this respect. You can't underestimate the amount of comfort and psychological warmth you can get from this as well. There's something comforting about putting this on when I know it's cold outside, and when combined with quality headgear I find that this makes me feel just as warm as the rightly chosen trousers and top or coat, etc. The Spectrum also maintains its shape very well. I have had a few products that have thinned out or lost their shape over the years, but this has lasted me well and I have no issues with it whatsoever. At just over the £10 mark, this is a bargain buy and an investment I highly recommend for when it gets cold. The main thing is that it's very functional and does what it's supposed to - it keeps your neck warm. Whether I've been cycling in the rain, walking along in windy freezing conditions, and even when I was in the Alps, it really helps keep your neck warm. It's machine washable and comes out good after use unlike some products which are good until you wash them. It's a middle of the range item, so you're not buying cheap rubbish and you're not forking out for a top item that costs more than it's actually worth. This does the job just perfectly. Recommended. Berghaus Spectrum Neck Gaiter
by zombieflesh For serious sports enthusiasts there are plenty of fancy pieces of clothing and equipment for you to get excited about. This particular item is rather plain and although its general purpose if for outdoor sports, I think this would appeal to pretty much anyone regardless of what sports you do or don't partake in. The Spectrum Neck Gaiter ... is made by Berghaus and costs £12.00. I have owned one of these for many years and it has certainly proved useful during that time! Product desctiption: "Neck gaiters are an essential piece of kit when the weather turns cold, forming a seal between your jacket and face, keeping out rain, wind and spindrift. The Berghaus Spectrum Neck gaitor uses Berghaus's own AWL 200 midweight fleece, which retains much of it's warmth when wet. " Although it's not a term I was familiar with when I bought this, a gaiter is basically a cowl type scarf. This one is a simple tube shape with flat edges and a drawstring at the top edge. The design allows you to slip the gaiter on over your head, and then adjust the tightness depending on how loosely or snugly you want it to fit. One size fits all and its plain appearance makes it wearable for both men and women. It is made from a 200 weight fleece which is fine and actually seems a little on the thin side, but when worn it is incredibly soft against the skin and feels nice to wear. It is comfortable as it can be adjusted to the size that you prefer. The fleece material is very good at retaining warmth and it makes a big difference to overall body temperature when this extra layer is worn with a sweat top or jacket. The material is not water resistant but when it has been rained on the water droplets seem to sit on the surface rather than soaking straight through, unless it is heavy rain in which case it gets soaked along with the rest of my outfit! The Berghaus Spectrum Gaiter is something that I would thoroughly recommend to anyone who cycles. I am not overly into bikes but I often like to enjoy a nice, leisurely bike ride and find that if I plan my outfit properly this allows me to get the most out of my experience. I always wear my hair tied back when I cycle so that I can fit my cycle helmet on properly over my hair withoput any loose bits getting in the way. This means that as I am cycling along my neck always catches the breeze and gives me a nasty chilly feeling. When the weather is colder this is really off-putting and can be quite unpleasant which means that I don't enjoy my cycling as much. This gaiter is perfect for wearing when I'm on my bike as it covers my entire neck area and - most importantly - it stays in place. Scarves are no good for this sort of situation as they can come loose or the ends flap around in the wind. The design of the gaiter with it's simple but handy little toggle drawstring means that my neck stays tucked in and I don't have to worry about it moving and coming loose when I'm riding along. I have also worn this with my winter coat when extra warmth is required during our freezing cold English weather. The colour of the fabric is plain old black which is perfect as it matches pretty much everything and does not really stand out. My only problem is that it's a rather boring looking thing and doesn't give much cred in the fashion stakes. However, it does the job it needs to so I am happy to keep wearing it. The fleece fabric is machine washable so once again this is another practical point. The material comes up nice and soft after washing and even after years of use and washing there has only been a slight appearance of wear, where the fabric is beginning to pill and a few little bobbles are visible. Overall I think this is an excellent practical item that would come in useful for anyone that does outdoor sports, especially cycling, jogging and hiking. A great piece of kit for a reasonable price. Berghaus Spectrum Neck Gaiter
by JohnJoeSmith I'm quite a keen rock climber and so spend quite a portion of my free time out of doors, typically half way up a cliff face or mountain. Ideally I would prefer to do this in a pair of shorts, a t-shirt, and get a chance to work on my tan but unfortunately the weather doesn't agree. With this in mind I need to pick my clothes so I can ... stay as warm as possible while being as mobile as possible on the rock. I can't remember the figure but I read at one point that we lose an obscene amount of body heat through our head and neck if they are uncovered. Enter the Berghaus Spectrum Neck Gaiter. Berghaus is a quality mountaineering brand that has existed for as long as I've been climbing. Their items are typically expensive but you do get what you pay for. Fortunately I picked up this neck gaiter as a special offer when I was buying a new rope in my local adventure sports shop. At first I was suspicious of how a circular piece of fleece was going to change my climbing experience but the man in the shop was adamant I try. On first inspection the gaiter is about 25cm long and about 15-20cm wide (it fits around my large head with a bit of a squeeze!) and is made of unremarkable black fleece. On the bottom edge is the iconic Berghaus logo, embroidered into the fleece in what appears to be quite a professional fashion. Along the top edge is a drawstring that when pulled and locked in place with the accompanying clip, turns this neck warmer into a make-do hat. The fleece itself seems quite hard wearing and I can attest that it has not torn or shredded in two years of solid use. Similarly the plastic clip to hold the drawstring in place has yet to show a single sign of failure. So top marks for construction and materials. To use the neck warmer you simply pull it over your head until it sits at your neck. It feels quite soft against the skin but be warned that if you have a beard, or even long stubble that you will experience so mild pulling from time to time. I've found it to be a touch too warm when I'm actually climbing and have found myself pulling at it halfway up a pitch to cool off. Holding the rope for someone however and it is perfect. On a cold day I have the neck gaiter on as well as my trusty aran wool hat. When the weather gets a bit warmer I switch the neck gaiter to a cool cap with a quick pull on the drawstring. A quick note on the drawstring, when climbing this comes in great use as the neck gaiter can be clipped to my harness to keep it out of my way when I don't need it, a simple touch but it works wonderfully. All in all this is a great little buy, or in my case a present. To be honest, at the time I wouldn't have spent £20 on it, but after all the experiences I've had with it and how well it's held together I would glady pay even more for a similar item now.
