Advantages: Protecting even in heavy rain

Disadvantages: None

My husband and I enjoy walking and if we were to let the typical UK weather prevent us, we would never get outside. My husband already had a pair waterproof overtrousers but I didn't, and it meant if we did get caught in a heavy shower, I had no way of keeping my clothes dry, whilst my husband was always lovely and dry. So about a year or so ago, when Millets were having a huge sale, I picked up a pair of these Berghaus Women's Deluge Overtrousers, which usually cost around the £50 mark, but I got at half price.

These overtrousers are available in black and in a good range of sizes starting from size 8 to 20. I would say that they are generally quite generous in sizing. I picked a size 10, and I was even able to wear these overtrousers up until I was about 6 months pregnant, and so with the stretchy waistband there is room.

Berghaus claim that these overtrousers will keep you dry and comfortable in wet weather conditions, and I have to say that having had these trousers for over a year now, I have had plenty of experience of wearing these in the pouring rain, and they do exactly as they claim - my clothes underneath are perfectly dry and I am kept warm and comfortable and certainly not soaked through. I would also say that they also help cut out some of the wind that can often hit you when you are walking, particularly near the coast.

Getting these overtrousers on is very easy. They come with 3/4 length zips meaning you can pull them on over shoes/boots easily without having to take anything off. THis is a great plus, as if you are walking and get caught in a heavy shower, you certainly don't want to be taking off your footwear to get these trousers on. I have managed to get these on over my walking boots in the middle of a shower without any problem. There is also upper leg ventilation that is meant to keep you dry and cool as well and stop you overheating - I find that they keep me quite warm, not too hot, but just comfortable.

As well as protecting from wet weather, Berghaus suggest that these trousers can also be worn as part of a base layer for colder winter weather. I haven't tried these trousers out for this purpose.

I have had so much use out of these trousers since I bought them. I use them for walking in the hills and even when I am out walking into town with the buggy and it means that the UK typical rain does not prevent me for going anywhere, I just get on the necessary gear like these trousers and head out. I find these trousers comfortable to wear over my trousers, even jeans and they certainly keep my completely dry and comfortable, and help cut out the wind on blustery days. The fact that I can put these trousers on over my boots and shoes is also a big advantage when out and about. Even though I didn't purchase these trousers at full price, having had them a while now I think they are worth every penny!

Summary: A comfortable waterproof overtrouser
