Berghaus Spectrum Neck Gaiter
Advantages: stays in position when moving, warm and cosy, washable
Disadvantages: not exactly stylish!
For serious sports enthusiasts there are plenty of fancy pieces of clothing and equipment for you to get excited about. This particular item is rather plain and although its general purpose if for outdoor sports, I think this would appeal to pretty much anyone regardless of what sports you do or don't partake in. The Spectrum Neck Gaiter is made by Berghaus and costs £12.00. I have owned one of these for many years and it has certainly proved useful during that time!
Product desctiption: "Neck gaiters are an essential piece of kit when the weather turns cold, forming a seal between your jacket and face, keeping out rain, wind and spindrift. The Berghaus Spectrum Neck gaitor uses Berghaus's own AWL 200 midweight fleece, which retains much of it's warmth when wet. "
Although it's not a term I was familiar with when I bought this, a gaiter is basically a cowl type scarf. This one is a simple tube shape with flat edges and a drawstring at the top edge. The design allows you to slip the gaiter on over your head, and then adjust the tightness depending on how loosely or snugly you want it to fit. One size fits all and its plain appearance makes it wearable for both men and women.
It is made from a 200 weight fleece which is fine and actually seems a little on the thin side, but when worn it is incredibly soft against the skin and feels nice to wear. It is comfortable as it can be adjusted to the size that you prefer. The fleece material is very good at retaining warmth and it makes a big difference to overall body temperature when this extra layer is worn with a sweat top or jacket. The material is not water resistant but when it has been rained on the water droplets seem to sit on the surface rather than soaking straight through, unless it is heavy rain in which case it gets soaked along with the rest of my outfit!
The Berghaus Spectrum Gaiter is something that I would thoroughly recommend to anyone who cycles. I am not overly into bikes but I often like to enjoy a nice, leisurely bike ride and find that if I plan my outfit properly this allows me to get the most out of my experience. I always wear my hair tied back when I cycle so that I can fit my cycle helmet on properly over my hair withoput any loose bits getting in the way. This means that as I am cycling along my neck always catches the breeze and gives me a nasty chilly feeling. When the weather is colder this is really off-putting and can be quite unpleasant which means that I don't enjoy my cycling as much. This gaiter is perfect for wearing when I'm on my bike as it covers my entire neck area and - most importantly - it stays in place. Scarves are no good for this sort of situation as they can come loose or the ends flap around in the wind. The design of the gaiter with it's simple but handy little toggle drawstring means that my neck stays tucked in and I don't have to worry about it moving and coming loose when I'm riding along.
I have also worn this with my winter coat when extra warmth is required during our freezing cold English weather. The colour of the fabric is plain old black which is perfect as it matches pretty much everything and does not really stand out. My only problem is that it's a rather boring looking thing and doesn't give much cred in the fashion stakes. However, it does the job it needs to so I am happy to keep wearing it.
The fleece fabric is machine washable so once again this is another practical point. The material comes up nice and soft after washing and even after years of use and washing there has only been a slight appearance of wear, where the fabric is beginning to pill and a few little bobbles are visible.
Overall I think this is an excellent practical item that would come in useful for anyone that does outdoor sports, especially cycling, jogging and hiking. A great piece of kit for a reasonable price.
Summary: A practical item that makes it easy to keep warm
