Berghaus Spectrum Neck Gaiter
Advantages: Great price, protection from cold, fleecy material, hat?!
Disadvantages: Freezes / gets wet from breath in extreme conditions
When we as a family went to Lapland for a week at Christmas, we could not have known just how invaluable one small piece of fleecy material would be for each of us. Someone had mentioned to us that we must get neck gaiters to give us extra protection from the freezing temperatures and wind chill that we would inevitably experience, but I just didn't realise how good they were until we arrived.
Lapland on its coldest day for us reached an impressive -36. Yes we had thermals on, ski jackets etc but had we not had a neck gaiter each we would have been left with no protection for the neck and face at all. It's important to wear them properly and not simply throw them on like you would a scarf when putting on your coat. I found that I gained the most protection and warmth from them by putting it on straight after my thermal layer top, then putting my mid layer on which in effect captured the ends inside my clothing so there wasn't any gaping holes etc where the cold could easily sneak through. Once you have your ski jacket on you are able to lift the front of the gaiter up the face and if possible over the nose, which offers protection from the cold especially if the seal between your neck and your jacket is correct. Then you simply pull the toggle at the back of the neck to tighten it and secure it in place.
For the £12 these cost, it did bump up our shopping bill when we had four in the basket but they have been worth their weight in gold. I use mine on colder days in the UK when I am cycling and the girls have worn them most days to school. Their scarves which match their coats are quite big and chunky knit and they drive them mad when trying to run around and play at school, but the gaiters take up no room and yet still provide the protection.
When we bought these in a ski shop, the assistant told us that they can actually double up as hats too if you draw the toggle tightly! I don't know why you wouldn't just buy a hat to be honest but a nice little extra I guess!
The light fleece material actually retains warmth, even when it's wet so not only does it protect you from the cold, but it keeps you warm too. Obviously if you have it covering your face (as I did on holiday most of the time!) then it is going to get damp from your breath , this does take a little while to get used to but it's better than no protection at all. The worst thing for me was putting it back on wet, for example if we went to a restaurant we obviously took it off but then had nowhere to dry it - this was the worst feeling and I dreaded it! Also, because of the cold temperatures, it may also freeze! We went snowmobiling across a lake at night for three hours in search of the Northern Lights and the front of the gaiter around the mouth area was completely frozen!
It is comfy to wear because of the soft fleecy material and its also adjustable to the wearer because of the toggle at the back. Available in a small range of colours (black, red and blue) It's also machine washable.
