Compressport are primarily a Triathlon brand, but as is often the way the products are seeping into the pure running market as well. I picked up a pair of these at the Virgin London Marathon Expo, where Chrissie Wellington (Elite Iron Distance Triathlete) was promoting the products, and her latest book of course.
I have been a fan of compression clothing for recovery for some time, although having skinny legs and no waist to speak of, I found the tights I've tried from other brands to be either too loose on the legs or too tight around the waist and stomach. The idea of compression tights without the issue of squashing my stomach and bladder therefore really appealed to me, hence I sought out the F-Like Full Leg.
Like other compression garments they work by supporting the muscles to prevent excess movement, and accelerating the flow of blood between the muscles and the heart, which in turn helps flush out toxins.
You have to get your legs measured in order to know which size to buy. You could do this very easily yourself, but the sales chap very kindly measured mine for me and, not surprisingly, told me I'd need the smallest ones. I paid £60, which was a special Expo price. The RRP is £70 but you can buy them online for around £63.
As it happened my legs were pretty tired that day. I'd been ill for weeks and had only just started to get back to decent mileage, I'd run 14 miles that morning and walked around all afternoon at the Expo, so when I got back to the hotel I decided to give them a try.
They are really difficult to put on it has to be said. They're quite thin and I have nails, so I was being very careful. Also they're very, very tight. But then, they're meant to be. I could feel the compression on my calves and quads immediately, and the knee section has a different weave so I was able to bend my knees as normal. They're held up at the top with a thick rubber/silicon band, which was comfortable and didn't move at all (although did leave a rather odd mark on my legs the next day).
Supposedly you can wear these to run/cycle in, but I don't think I'd find that comfortable. Plus they don't look terribly attractive on. They're something of a passion killer.
I slept in them and wrestled myself out of them in morning then went off for my first attempt at faster running in nearly a month. My legs felt amazing!
I've worn them a few times since, and they're easier to get on and off now, but still do the job perfectly. I ran the Edinburgh marathon at the end of May and wore them for the journey home and also slept in them. My legs have never felt so good the day after a marathon. I did still have a little soreness, but I was able to go downstairs forwards. Seasoned marathon runners will know how difficult that can be!
I can't sing their praises highly enough and I'm even tempted by some of their other products now I've tried these. I didn't find them hot or sweaty, even when worn under tracksuit bottoms on a very warm train. And most importantly, they work!
