Skins Compressions shorts are designed in Australia in conjunction with top athletes. The compression technology is used to increase oxygen levels in active muscles. The compression shorts also act as climate control and allow the body to wick away sweat leaving the body to regulate its temperature more effectively during exercise. That's the science behind it! but does it actually work?
The skins A200 shorts are not the top of the range but still carry a price tag of around £27 from most online stores. The comparable ranges from its competitors such as Nike and Adidas are around £20-£25 and the Under Armour shorts are virtually the same as the Skins. This shows that the shorts are badly priced, for those who would wear them multiple times per week it represents good value after a season or so of use. They aren't sport specific so can be used for a range of activities from running, gym work, football or rugby.
One of the best benefits I find of wearing the Skins shorts is the support it gives your muscles and your crown jewels! The compression always makes my legs feel secure and I haven't had any muscular pain during matches without wearing them. You still need to stretch before exercise, these aren't a miracle cure for non injury but can help prevent small strains from time to time. I often keep them on for as long as I can post match to try promote oxygen flow and reduce lactic acid levels. This is something I've found to be very effective. Skins do a separate recovery range but I see no reason for paying for another set when my a200's seem to do the job just fine. I must admit heat in my legs has never been an issue in sport so the wicking away of sweat etc isn't as much of a benefit in shorts as it is when you consider a shirt.
The Shorts have kept their shape and colour (my pair are white) very well through multiple washes. In comparison to my Nike compression shorts which have frayed a little and become a little too stretchy. The Skins quality is far superior to many other compression shorts I have come across in sport.
The shorts are very comfortable and the Skins sizing guide which utilises your Body Mass Index (BMI) for the a200 series makes picking a size very precise. The shorts flat seams mean that even under compression you aren't left with marks on you from seams and cannot feel them digging into you when on. The shorts flex with your body and you lose no range of movement unlike a pair of Macron pair I have tried which severely hindered my movement.
It's not a big issue but the Skins logos wear off the shorts very quickly, a few washes in and the logo had completely gone. It's a shame that an item that costs so much looks so tatty after a few uses, but it doesn't effect the effectiveness of the compression shorts. As they are an under garment this really didn't bother me, I just thought it was worth including for anyone who has a thing about their kit being in pristine condition.
A good investment for keen sportsmen. Don't do any exercise these days without them on, would recommend to anyone even considering the negatives about the logos etc coming off. This is a 5 star product in the compression shorts world.
