Football goes through its faddy phases, from Robbie Fowler's nasal strip to the mercifully brief appearance of the Snood, but this type of thing appears to be a lasting one. Probably because there's actually a semi-decent reason for wearing it; in the grim, relentless grip of winter and the bleakness of a sub-zero Sunday morning, you often need something to keep the cold out - although gloves and hats soon become superfluous, and wearing tights just isn't an option for those of right mind. Underlayers are a better option, and Under Armour - currently trying to forge a real presence in the UK market - make some of the best. Sitting tight to the skin, the idea is that they'll keep you warm in winter and cool in summer; although there are different versions for cold and hot weather. This, the wintry version is a bit thicker, and does a really good job of keeping you snug. At the same time, it doesn't have you sweating buckets within minutes of starting the game; it keeps you warm enough, but no more than this. That said, it's still a bit of a gimmick, and often seems to be worn for the looks as much as the practicality. In all but the coldest conditions, a bit of old-fashioned running around will get you warm - do you really need to spend £30-40 on this? Comfort-wise, the skin-tight design of underlayers isn't for everyone; they're fine for the elite athletes with their chiselled abs and toned physiques, but not so flattering for your average Sunday League plodder. Still, you might just be grateful come that brisk December morning ...
I love my under armour tops. I have a selection for all sorts of uses, some of which you may read in my other reviews in the future. Under armour tops are especially good for the winter time for all sorts of sports so if you are the type who likes their outdoor sport all year round then make sure you have at least a couple of under armour tops. HOW MUCH DOES IT COST? The long sleeve compression style top which I am reviewing here retails for about £39 but it's worth keeping your eye open for bargains at the discounted sports retailers and online. I got mine for £29.99 in a local golf shop on offer but it's money well spent. WHAT'S IT LIKE TO WEAR? When you first put on the compression top you might be forgiven for thinking, "have I bought too small a size?" However after a few minutes you forget you have it on as it moulds itself to your body. I wear mine in the winter when playing golf and I have played in minus temperatures with just the top, a jumper and a light golf jacket and I was not cold at all. I have also worn it under my football strip when playing outdoors in the depths of winter and found myself actually being a bit too warm! WHAT'S IT MADE OF? The under armour top is made of a special moisture-wicking material made up of tiny micro fibres and a lightly brushed inner lining for comfort. This lining is the main thing which keeps you warm but at the same time sweat free. VERDICT Under Armour gear is worn throughout the world by top athletes in all sports as well as the ordinary man in the street but no matter who you are it performs just as well.
