Harrows Hologram Dart Flights
by JJJJ There are a number of companies that manufacture darts flights, but two of the most respected are Unicorn and Harrows. Which of these two brands you favour is down to personal preference - but I generally opt for whichever is cheapest online or in the sports shop. Today i'm taking a look at the Harrows Hologram variety, which are ... available for 99p from Amazon for a pack of three. The flights are available in a few different designs including assorted animals, playing cards, and the dartboard variety shown in dooyoo's picture. Each design has a metallic sheen which provides a certain depth to the image, and the colours are well saturated and printed to a fairly high standard. Using the flights - - - - - - - - - - - In my experience, the flights attach onto the darts smoothly, and I find that they don't fall out too frequently (as is often the case with the really cheap flights on the market). Regarding their performance, aerodynamically the flights are very good - i've used them with both heavy brass darts and lighter steel ones, and they fly evenly and smoothly through the air. Where their performance isn't so good is on the longevity front - I've found that they quickly become damaged, especially at the back edge which can split sometimes after only a few days. I know all flights will eventually break over time, but these seem to degrade a little faster than most others I have used in the past. To be honest, it's a little strange because the other Harrows flights I have used (especially the ones from the 'Quadro' range) seem to have a very good lifespan. Final Word - - - - - - - As darts flights go, the Harrows Hologram variety sit right in the middle of the quality scale - on the one hand they look good and fly well; however, their overall longevity leaves a little to be desired. Luckily at under a pound, the flights are fairly cheap to replace - cautiously recommended. Read the complete review |

Harrows Hologram Dart Flights
by GodfatherOfSoul I have my own dartboard at home and therefore have the opportunity to practice playing darts as often as I like. Unfortunately, I am still what you might call a 'rank amateur' but that doesn't stop me from participating in the mass accumulation of darting accessories from time to time. When my form reaches one of its frequent nadirs, I ... often assume that changing dart flights is the solution to my troubles and that new flights will bring new hope. I purchased the Harrows Hologram flights with this fallacy in mind. The Harrows hologram flights range covers a whole host of designs but it just so happens that among the ones I chose were the very set pictured here. I chose these (along with another design) because I liked the sharp image and the bright colouring and there is no denying that these flights impressed me when they arrived. Being holographic, they shimmer and shine in the light as they move and have the power to transform an ordinary looking set of darts into something really eye-catching. (Attracting attention is not really what you want when you're hitting double-3 instead of bullseye but that's a different issue). Unfortunately, my positive first impressions of the flights were not matched by their performance, which was mostly a disappointment. === Performance === As with all the flights I buy, these have the 'standard' shape which is the shape most professional darts players use. Different shaped flights work best for different people but after trying other types, I always have the most success with this shape. Putting the flights onto my darts was no trouble at all first time around. They slipped smoothly onto the stem of my darts and felt secure when in place. I currently have metal stems on my darts as opposed to plastic stems because of the way I throw (the metal stems help to even out the balance of the darts in flight - Yawn!) but they caused no trouble when putting the flights on (initially). As anyone who plays darts will know, flights have a tendency to fly off a dart when it hits another dart already stuck in the board. This is normal and helps prevent darts from failing to stick in the board (which might be the case if the flight remained stuck in place). Therefore, frequently reattaching the flights is necessary during a game/practice. Unfortunately though, after several re-fittings of the flights, the nice shiny hologram design started to scratch off where the stem would constantly rub against the flights! To my horror, my beautifully designed flights were undergoing a gradual progression towards tattiness. I think my metal stems may have had something to do with this since the stems do grate a little more on the flights than a plastic stem would. However, I was still unimpressed with the quality and have had no such issues with my many other flights used on my metal stems. The most disappointing thing about these flights however is their tendency to suffer physical damage very quickly. After constant flight-to-flight collisions during practice and the occasional time when one of my darts hits one of the other's flight directly the damage soon mounts up. The top of the flights (furthest from the sharp end of the dart) soon became frayed and crumpled. The design again started to peel away and the aerodynamics of the flights were compromised. After a few days of using these flights I had to replace them because they started to become too tatty to work properly. Immediately after replacing them with new flights, I was throwing more accurately and my darts seemed to fly better through the air (not just an illusion of the new-flights fallacy). I think the reason behind the lack of strength in these flights is the thin plastic they are made from. The thickness is not much greater than that of a plastic tray found in a box of chocolates (I often wonder if I might be better throwing a box of chocolates at the dartboard rather than using darts!). Contrast this with my other much sturdier dimplex flights and the thickness there is much greater resulting in a sturdier flight which I have used for a much longer time without showing any damage. === Price and Availability === These flights cost little more than any other basic set of flights and set me back £0.40 for a set of three. I bought them from dartscorner.co.uk (where I buy all my darting accessories) and would highly recommend this site if you are looking for anything darts related. They have a huge range of flights so if this particular design is not for you, you will be sure to find a set that you like on their website. As these flights are from Harrows (a big name in darts), they will also be stocked in many sports shops that have a darts section - think JJB/JD Sports and Sports Direct. My local independent sports store also stocks these so you should have no trouble finding them if you want. === Verdict === Overall, I would not recommend these flights for a serious or prolific darts player. There is no question that they look good when new and for the occasional player they may suffice if your aim is to have a good looking set of darts without needing them to perform for too long a period. After repeated use however, the flimsiness of the plastic and the holographic film starts to show and the darts quickly become damaged and cheap-looking, but more importantly, fail to work well as flights. After dispatching with these flights, I switched to a set of Harrows dimplex flights and would wholeheartedly recommend those instead. The dimplex flights are made of thicker and therefore stronger plastic and have a dimpled surface which adds to their rigidity. I find that my darts fly smoother with the dimplex flights and they have lasted me a lot longer than the hologram flights did and have shown no signs of peeling or damage despite many collisions and plummets to the floor. The issues I had with the end of the flights crumpling have been absent from my dimplex set which I have been using for several weeks now and for the same price (around 40p for a set of three) they are much better value. Harrows Quadro Dart Flights
by JJJJ Darts flights can be notoriously difficult items to review due to the fact that superficially there appears to be little difference between the ones manufactured by different companies. What can be assessed however is their aerodynamic properties, longevity, and appearance - and this is something which i'll attempt to do in the following ... write-up. Harrows are one of the world's leading manufacturers of darts accessories, and today I'm looking at the Union Flag variant of their 'Quadro' series. These rather patriotic flights came free with some darts that I bought a while back; to be honest, I'm not sure I would have chosen them if I had bought them individually, as I generally prefer to use plain flights. However, when purchased alone, the flights are available from JJB Sports for 49p for a pack of three. Design & Appearance - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Designed with a curved rear edge (rather than the sharp angular sides as seen in many other dart flights), the Quadros allow the darts to fly through the air smoothly and efficiently. I personally prefer this style of flight design to the more elongated, almost rectangular flights that I have used in the past - they seem to be more stable in the air, especially when used in combination with heavier brass darts. I had no trouble attaching the flights to the dart shaft, and they can be removed similarly easily. Build Quality / Wear & Tear - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Constructed from a sturdy polyester, my Quadro flights first began to split at the point where they attach to the aforementioned dart shaft, eventually making it difficult slide them into place. That said, the damage was the result of general wear and tear, occurring after around five months of light use. I would argue that this is perfectly acceptable and to be honest, they're easily as good as any other flight I have used from the perspective of longevity. Final Word - - - - - - - For only 49p, Harrows Quadrow darts flights offer very good value for money - they do the job that they're designed to do, plus they last for a decent amount of time before they give up the ghost. The Union Flag design? well, that's up to you - but there are plenty of other colourful designs in the Quadro range for you to choose from if they're not your cup of tea. Read the complete review |
