Advantages: Comfort, Hard wearing, Quality

Disadvantages: Availability

These boots are old but the fact that they still command a fairly hefty price tag should tell you something. It’s a bit of a cliché but we’re talking about football here so a few clichés are positively encouraged – sorry, I digress, basically these boots are a perfect example of the ‘if it ain't broke, don't fix it' mentality.

For years players managed to get by without artificial aids to help them instead having to rely solely on their natural ability (and fitness??). Given that no boot on the market was likely to enhance their ability to any great extent it is not unreasonable to assume that comfort would be the major factor when selecting a boot. These boots, along with the studded World Cup version and Puma King were the boot of choice for many pros. As a consequence they also became items to aspire to for kids in schools everywhere.

When I could finally afford my own boots (parents never understand the importance of having the most expensive clobber and how it enhances your performance!) I plumped straight for the studded World Cups – it was August and I soon realised my mistake – therefore, with the solid pitches beneath my feet I managed to justify to myself that I also needed a pair of Copa Mundial.

Wow - hard, dry pitches really highlight the very best thing about these boots – it’s like wearing a pair of slippers. No more blisters – I could be in training shoes. The leather is so soft it takes almost no time to ‘break in’ and they last for ages if you look after them. The soft, supple nature of the boot also has an advantage in terms of control, touch and feel when you are on the ball. As I am now well and truly past the days of wanting the best kit for the school match I also appreciate the understated appearance of these boots – we’ve all seen the guy in the shiny white boots that really can’t play.

So for their s
heer comfort, hardwearing nature, understated styling and just plain good old-fashioned ‘you get what you pay for’ quality Copa Mundial really is a truly great boot – if only my ability on the pitch could do them justice.
