Adidas, is a German company who "employ" a wide range of people to manufactor, market and advertise their products, should you be an "employee" who is used in their latest advertising campaign then your terms and conditions of employement will be second to none! Just look at the money Mr Beckham, gets for a few hours on a photo shoot! David Beckham is paid handsomely for his promotion of all things Adidas, even getting a new pair of boots for each game he plays! I have nothing against Adidas "exploiting" poor old David and the millions of Man U fans who probably flock to buy all things Adidas now, if someones been paid a fair price for a fair days work so be it! Adidas like thousands of other companies, have seen the benefit of getting thier goods made up in third world countries, its alot cheaper than say having the goods made in European Countries. Adidas has sub contracted alot of their manufactoring work to Indoneasia. The companies that Adidas has sub contracted to are based in Jakarta, the Indonesian capital. Conditions in this factory are barbaric. Workers as young as 15 years old are being indirectly exploited by Adidas. Rates of pay are around the $60 a month mark, for this pittance the workers are expected to work inexcess of 70 hours a week, sexual harrassement is also rith in the two factories, illegal deductions are made from a workers pay for minor dismeanours eg being 5 minutes late for work. Adidas realises it has a problem with these factories, so graciously gave the workers a pay rise - the company that sells football shirts here in the Uk for over £40 a time gave these works a handsome rise of 75 cents a day! Hardly goint to make a big dent in their profits now is it? Adidas not only has contracts with these Indonesian factory's but has other contracts with developing nations, unfortunately the conditions in these other factories is very similiar to what has been repor
ted. One Thai worker spoke out last year about the factory she worked in. This factory was in Bangkok, she earnt less than a pound a day for a 12 hour shift. This woman along with her fellow workers was forced to work 12 hours a day 7 days a week. Satutory rights to holiday pay and sick pay were also denied! Adidas makes millions in profits due to the exploitation of foreign workers and the public that buy's its shirts and other goods. Moraly if Adidas wants to use foreign workers then they should set up their own factories in these countries with decent working conditions and rates of pay. It would be nice to think that Adidas was alone in this exploitation of workers from developing countries but this is not the case, other multi nationals have seen the fact that a quick profit can be made in these countries eg Nike and Gap. My conscience will not allow me to buy Adidas and I hope that others will feel the same.

TJ-Mackey - 25/06/01 As Tommy and Liz have already said, I suspect this kind of thing is much more widespread. Excellent opinion though Jo, as I'm sure many people weren't aware of this side of Adidas' business. |
