Advantages: Great exercise, pretty fun for all you ball bouncers out there!

Disadvantages: Hard to find somewhere to play and to join a team

Basketball may make you think of tall men jumping up to slam dunk the net. However, many people play basketball and it is very popular in America. Basketball is a great way to work out as you are always moving, jumping up and down and making sprints down the side of the court.

The basic rules are 5 a side and you play with a specialized basketball to shoot it in the nets a each side on the court. There are many rules that you have to learn, but they do make good sense once learnt and are easy to pick up. The international games last 10 minutes and there are 4 rounds. The NBA games have four quarters of 12 minutes each. NBA is a very popular tournament in the USA and consists of all the big teams. Most people who do play are pretty tall; however I am sure you don't have to be 7 foot. The reason why so many tall people play it is to reach the net and also for defense against shooters.

I find basketball a really fun game to play. Tackling other players involves sticking your hand in and you aren't allowed to deliberately kick it with your foot. There are loads of tricks that you can also get up to with a basketball, but some aren't allowed in the real game such as spinning it on your finger. You can't run down the side lane spinning the ball on your finger. However, tricks you can pull off in real games include dribbling in and out the legs and round the body.

It is a great sport to do to keep fit as it works your whole body. Jumping up towards the net, whether you are attacking or defending works your arm muscles as well as legs to actually jump. Generally, you will be running round quite a lot so it is great exercise. There are loads of different kinds of passes such as the simple chest pass where you position the ball at the chest and thrust it out. There is also the bounce pass, which can be good to give the ball some distance. A more risky pass, but one that you may need to do is where you throw it over the head. This is risky as the other team could jump up and get the ball.

Basketball is not very much like netball because there's no pivoting and no limit to how much you can run. In other words, basketball is much better exercise and more fun to play anyway. I would recommend you try it out one day as it is a great game and fun to play!
