Advantages: meet new people , its fun, the rooms are nice
Disadvantages: none
If you enjoy climbing, Plas Y Brenin is the place to do it. PYB is perfectly situated; because when you walk out the centre you will notice that all around you there are climbs. The climbing in PYB is great fun, because everyone starts of on bouldering (where you just clamber about on boulders or large rocks, without a rope or a harness on, but you have to wear a helmet and if you want rock shoes.) Then you go on to single pitch climbing where you just go up on one rope and sometimes you get belayed from the top or bottom depending on the surface below you. On day three you move on to multi pitch climbs, which depending on your attitude can be easy or hard. You start the multi pitch climb at the bottom of the crag where you tie up your harness, put your helmet on and connect to either the second rope or both. On multi pitch climbs there are three in a group, a leader and two junior climbers. When you are ready to start, the instructor will start to climb up to a ledge about 100ft off the ground, hooking in protection in case he slips, then the next climber will go up unhooking their rope from the protection and placing the other climbers rope in, then the third person will climb up while and take out the protection with the nut key, while being belayed from above then you continue doing the same jobs. Equipment loaned to you: -harness, Sling, 4 karabiners, Rock boots, Nut wedge, Helmet, Large rucksack, 2 small slings, Belay plate, If any equipment is lost you will have to pay for the item lost. The climbing course I did was “rock climbing for young people-under your own steam” the course lasts for five days and it cost £310.
