Courtney's gyms sure do represent good value for money.

I've been to the one in Balham several times, though I here there's also one down south in Tooting (if you're unfortunate to live that far down the Northern Line.)

The main room is crammed full of cardiovascular and weights machines, with several of each type so that queues are kept to a minimum. They have the obligatory mirrored walls so that you can keep check on who's eyeing up your sweaty bits, and have just introduced the huge rubber balls that are supposed to improve your posture and are not just there to throw at the muscle marys (apparently.)

Speaking of Muscle Marys, they have their own dark and dingy hole into which they squeeze - completely separate to the main room. No worries about feeling like a worm with a penchant for marbles here - this is a normal gym for normal people.

The staff are cool, young and friendly and are eager to sign you up to classes in the huge fitness room. They do yoga (which my mate monkeygirl seemed to enjoy as it involves lying around on mats a lot), along with aerobics etc. allfor a reasonable sum.

All in all, if you want to join a no nonsense Mary-free gym, do Courtneys.
