Advantages: Comfortable, Highly visible

Disadvantages: Very cold when wet, Suspect stitching

In preparation for the 78 mile bike ride I did earlier this week I had to buy quite a large amount of kit. Water bottle, helmet, new back tyre and the item which is the subject of this review, Nimrod cycling gloves. As you can well imagine 78 miles on a bike takes quite a while and I thought that considering I was going to be propping my body up on my arms the entire time I might as well get something to make it more comfortable. Not only that I wanted something to keep my hands warm because I knew they would get cold.
I went into my local JJB sports and asked if they had any cycling gloves. The helpful lady took me to the boxing glove section at first ( another story for a different time ) but after some convincing she instead took me to what I wanted to see.
There wasn't a very big selection as lets face it, how often do people buy cycling gloves? Not all that often. I choose a compromise between what I wanted and what I could afford. These gloves cost me about £6 which I thought was a good deal, the fact that the next cheapest set were over £20 put me off a lot though.
The gloves themselves are cut off ones ( tips of the fingers arn't coverd ) and the inside of the glove is padded. This is what I wanted, the cut off fingers to help me changing gear and retain my dexterity. Whilst at the same time providing the soft cushiony part for holding on the to handlebars.
A bit of a description of the gloves.
The inside of the gloves is made of a water proof black suade type material, this is hard wearing and also a thermal insulator. The idea being that holding onto the handlebars your hands won't get cold or wet. On top of this, right in the centre of were you girp the bars, is the cushioned part of the glove. It is a thin cousin of what I can only assume is high density foam and it is coverd with the stuff they put on the bottom of novelty slippers. You know the kind of bobbeled material.
On top of the glove over the thumb and fir
st finger is a black velvet type material ( don't ask why I know all these material names ). This is always warm to the touch and I found it great for warming my nose when it was really cold. The top of the glove over the rest of the hand is a yellow lycra. This is really thin and serves a great purpose I only noticed a few minutes ago whilst looking at these gloves. When cycling you indicate with your hands, these yellow parts are perfect for this because they are easily visible. Good thinking mr desinger man.

The gloves on feel very comfortable and riding in them for over 9 hours I didn't get sore hands. What I did get though was very cold hands. After it had been raining for about 2 hours my hands were in a lot of pain. The rain and wind from riding produced a lovely wind chill that these gloves did nothing to stop. My fingers were numb and at one point I could no longer tell if I was even holding on to the bars. There is definatly no way these keep your hands warm when wet. The stiching that holds the hem of the gloves together has started to come undone on my pair of gloves and I'm not happy as I've only worm them once, I'm going to have to get out a sewing kit and fix this ( a male that knows how to sew, hard to believe but its true )

I was overall pleased with these gloves, they kept my hands comfy whilst riding and ( although I didn't know it at the time ) made it safer for me to turn corners. Just don't rely on these in cold weather. Get full length outdoor gloves.
Thanks for the read.
