Advantages: Well equipped, spacious, conveniently located
Disadvantages: More expensive than some gyms
I've been a member of David Lloyd, Southampton to for the last six months and so far I've been very impressed.
I've been a member of a number of gyms, but this is by far the best and for me it represents great value for money.
The gym itself is massive and has lots of equipment. I've never had to queue for any of the cardio vascular machines as there are so many of each one. There are also some less common machines which it is great to try.
The classes that I have attended have always been well run and enjoyable. In particular I like the Keiser Cycling (spinning) classes as they are fast paced with some great music. I also enjoy the pilates and aquaerobics classes. The timetable is comprehensive and classes seem to be at convenient times. One thing that has changed recently is that the club no longer prints timetables for classes, although this isn't really a problem as it is available online.
In addition to the gym and studios David Lloyd have two adult swimming pools- one indoor and one outdoor. The outdoor one is an absolute joy when the sun is out, and both are heated to a pleasent temperature. The changing facilities are always clean and warm and the showers are excellent.
There is a cafe/ restaurant at the site, ideal if you fancy a coffee or a snack post-work out. There is also a small sports shop where you can pick up work-out essentials as well as a hair and beauty salon to pamper yourself if you're so inclined.
David Lloyd is certainly not cheap, but I think that the range and standard of the facilities makes if great value for money for anyone looking for a high spec health club and gym.
I believe there are also excellent racquet sport facilities at the club although I've never used them myself.....
Summary: A great health club in Southampton
